Temple dress guidelines [MormonISM - Open]
Mormon Times ^ | Jan. 27, 2011 | Trent Toone

Editor's note: Third in a series about the Mormon wedding experience.

In his book, “The Holy Temple,” President Boyd K. Packer provides a wise reason for brides to select an appropriate wedding dress.

“When you have the opportunity to go to the temple to participate in the temple ceremonies or to witness a sealing, remember where you are. You are a guest in the house of the Lord. You should groom yourself and clothe yourself in such a way that you would feel comfortable should your Host appear,” the senior apostle wrote.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has provided guidelines regarding appropriate temple wedding dresses and clothing (Source: The Eternal Marriage Student Manual, p. 317).

“Brides may wear their wedding dress in the temple to be sealed. Dresses must be white, without heavy (or elaborate) ornamentation, have long sleeves and a modest neckline, have all sheer material lined, and the train must be removable or be able to be pinned or hooked up out of the way. If there is any question about the appropriateness, take the dress or fabric and pattern to the temple for approval.”

SNIP

“Guests should be counseled to dress as they would attend a sacrament meeting. Tuxedos or other formal wear is not appropriate. All guests must have current temple recommends.”...

You might note a couple of other tactics used to try to antagonize is the use of disrespectful or insulting terms or language and/or pictures.

Do you wear the garment both night and day as instructed in the endowment and in accordance with the covenant you made in the temple?

Night and day?

I'd think that would start getting a little funky...

[and greeting to MarkBsnr! Long time no see br’er.]

Thank you and greetings from the land of the ever so busy and long working hours. And a family with five kids.

Still, I take time when I can; you guys are doing good work and I like reading it, even if I cannot contribute much at times.

We got our goats from Borden, Indiana; we have 13 acres and it’s too flat for a shooting range, although if I aim in the right directions, I’ll miss the neighbor’s houses by 1000’s of feet.

We had a dry pond with a treed perimeter. The bottom of the bowl was maybe 20 feet deep. One of the banks was almost perfect. Also; from the ramp behind the house to the edge of the trees was exactly 40 yards. All of my short range guns were sighted in to 40 yards. The driveway was 700 feet long - I had a John Deere 460 with a 4' plow with chains that was inadequate one or two days a year to keep the driveway open. The house was very well ventilated with Pella windows which were also great insulators. Normally with the winds, we were able to keep the AC off except for maybe 7-10 days per summer. A corn burning stove with dual thermostats with the propane furnace heated most adequately.

I see you guys are down by Louisville. Better weather than where we were north of Fort Wayne.

I stand corrected. Or, rather, I lie down unconsciously corrected...

I am guessing that a Mormon bride’s dress looks like the cotton printed dresses that you see in pictures, only white and long. Then there would be the hair style! BARF!

How did this strange look ever become the accepted standard of dress for Mormon women? Bless their hearts!

I hope that one of you Mormons will tell me that your women are not still required to look like the pictures I have seen.

Split the difference.

The GOATS were from Borden: not me!

Try Indianapolis area.

Try Indianapolis area.

I did. It wasn't a good fit, especially around the shoulders. For the last 6 years, Iowa has fit better. However, my former employer is in the process of shutting down and I am contracting out as a floor ME. Perhaps Indy might be a better fit now, since I've lost weight.
