On January 16, Comedy Central aired "Denis Leary & Friends Present Douchebags & Donuts." On January 18, Comedy Central Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment released the DVD nationwide. The opening segment of this video is addressed by Bill Donohue today:
The standup special opens with a clip of Pope Benedict XVI talking to a crowd. But there is a voice-over that is dubbed in to make it seem like he is discussing priestly sexual abuse. Leary then appears on a stage with a large illuminated Cross in the background; he prances around extending his middle finger at it. On stage with him is a singing trio of women dressed as nuns in habit wearing short skirts.
The clip of the pope has him screaming, "Heil Hitler," proclaiming, "Oh yeah, I'm the f***ing pope, for Christ's sake, the god**** Fuehrer." The pope then introduces Leary as Father Denis Leary and he proceeds to mimic confession. Here are some of the lines:
"Bless me, Father, for I have sinnedyeah, pull down my pants and put your penis in" "Thou shalt not kill and Thou shalt not lie, and don't drop the soap when the pope is nearby. Cause they may hate gays but they do love the guys" "Well, the nuns are goin' down on other nuns, and the priests are chasin' after altar boy buns, and the pope will move you when the damage is done" "Jesus, Mary and Josephine, well this church is full of some giant queens, so break out the candles and the Vaseline"

Catholic ping!
Who?
Buckle up, Pyro. Lent is coming.
I had taped this and just got to watch it last night... I was flabbergasted. All I could think of was I wish I was in the audience so I could boo. I did notice quite a few people sitting very uncomfortably during the song, it was after all a fundraiser for NY Fireman.
I’ll check Leary out when he goes after the Jihadists.
That was my question. Who?
He can do all he wants as he progresses on his self-destructing rant.
Things will come full circle. May or may not take awhile, but there will be payback.
In light of the Vatican’s instructions to the Irish Bishops to suppress information about sexual abuse by priests (lying by omission) I’d say the Roman Catholic Church has done more damage to itself than any foul-mouthed comedian could ever cause.
This guy always struck me as just an angry drunk with a microphone. Wonder when his scheduled rant is against Islam?
I can’t decide whether to cry or throwup!!
He did. This was on his Christmas special a few years ago.
Seriously how does this matter? Christ said you will be persecuted for my name, count it all blessing when you are. Do you think Christ is shocked by this? What do you think he was called or how he was abused on the way to Golgotha? Do you think a nobody comedian can “hurt” Christs feelings? He doesn’t need to be defended by us. He told us how we are to respond to such attacks. Am I off base here?
We watched it on Comedy Central... I used to like Leary. Just awful.
Leary is an equal-opportunity offender, he goes after liberals a lot, too.
There’s been a lot of self inflicted damage within the Catholic church, but that’s no excuse for this. One, Benedict has spent his life trying to do two things: help JP II in repelling the “post-Christian” antics of groups like the Jesuits, and two, cleaning the scum out of the church. For years, Benedict has been the harshest critic of these pedophiles that infected Catholicism, and he was constantly fought and overruled about dealing with them. And he seems to get no credit for those efforts at all. Hell, I’m not even a Catholic and I know this. I can read, and his history is all out there for people to see. Some just choose not to.
Bottom line, Leary was just looking for an excuse to be blasphemous. What do Nuns in short-shorts have to do with the pedophilia scandals? Those all dealt with homosexual pedophiles. No, Leary truly wanted to give the finger to the cross. And like so many others, when he’s before the highest of all judges, as we all will be one day, well, won’t he be mighty surprised.
OK, I'll check it out.
I think you hit the nail, brother. Christ is a big boy, and he’s got some powerful backing. If it makes some angry douchebag fell better to rip on the Church or the Pope, all I can say is that both have probably survived far worse. And Christ certainly has.
Let him rant.
In Ireland there was considerable sexual and physical abuse of young women by nuns.

I know I’m poking a wound here, but my point is that the RCC needs to affirmatively and decisively deal with these problems instead of doing what we know they’ve done: deny and conspire to cover up the facts.
If Pope Benedict, who I believe is a good man, deals with these issues then people like Leary will have nothing to say. See, like Ricky Gervais in Hollywood the other night, Leary’s “comedy” requires a ring of truth for it to have an effect. Otherwise it’s not comedy or commentary, it’s just a slander.
Sadly, were someone from the RCC to sue Leary for slander I’m afraid he’d be able to substantiate his case. And that’s not his fault, is it?
He’s disturbed.
