Members of a Michigan Sikh community are upset after a student was banned from bringing a religious sword to a public school.
The incident occurred at Bentley Elementary School in Canton when a fourth grader was caught wearing a small saber underneath his clothing, reports MyFoxDetroit.com.
The sabre, called a Kirpan, symbolizes Sikhs' efforts to ward off evils and followers say it poses no danger to the community. Any person who has been baptized into the faith -- the worlds fifth largest religion -- is expected to carry the saber all the time.
Its a religious symbol, Sikh leader Teikiran Singh told WJBK-TV, disputing the notion that it was a weapon.
It just reminds you of your spirituality. Its a fight against your internal evils.
The saber was discovered after an unidentified Sikh student and another student were reportedly roughhousing on the playground. The principal initially allowed the child to keep the sword but the Plymouth-Canton School District later determined the religious symbol resembled a weapon and was officially banned.

Background... A number of Sikhs and other Temples in Canton. Very Diverse, many engineers ( Ford bedroom Community ) and Doctors, many very smart kids. This was all over the Cover of the Canton Observer today, go find it, no you can’t post, it is on the band list...
Dear Sikhs - this is America. Welcome. F#@k off with your request. Our tolerance only goes so far. Don’t like it? Move back. Seriously.
No problem, as long as students and teachers are able to carry guns.
And sit directly behind the muzzies with swords.
My son is in deep 5hi7 because he wore some shooters' gloves. My wife bought them at Salvation Army for the cold and had no idea that's what they are. She was wondering why the fingers were removable.
This is his first year of public school. I think we're going back to homeschooling. It's been a nightmare.
Reyat testified that when a leader of a Sikh separatist group asked him to collect bomb-making materials in Vancouver in 1984, he agreed to do so “to help people in India.”
“I complied with Parmar’s request because I was very upset with the Indian government's treatment of the Sikh people and I wanted to assist their cause in any way that I could,” he said in a February 2003 affidavit for his second conviction.

THen I want to carry my pistol everywhere. Guns have been the symbol of most Christians in this country before it was founded.
USED TO. they had common sense not to shoot others with them back then. Teachers USED to be able to kick their ass if they goofed off too, but now they don’t. Parents USED TO not sue the school over every little thing either.
USED TO is not an argument.
Nice touch.
The Sikhs should wise up and start their own schools. At least get their children out of public schools before they’re turned into welfare slugs with IQs on a par with lichen.
What islamic kid? Stay on topic.
Maybe I should have used not well known
As I understand it, India has more Muslims than Pakistan (13% of 1 billion + people). It really is a bizarre situation there...
Powder..patch..ball FIRE!
Compare apples to apples please.
The sword is worn under clothes not in the open.
Why would you want your kid to wear a huge cross and carry an open bible around school? as a stunt? Being openly religious doesn’t prove your worth to God.
I was being facetious. You know what the left does if Christians even make a peep.
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
I can say, the last time a student brandished a similar piece and told me, "It's part of my religion," I promptly confiscated the object and advised the youngster he was welcome to pick it up after class to take it to his religious service of choice. [I am a sometime sub, otherwise, providing I had my way (and a non-pansy principal), he and his parents would have picked up the object after school]
The person who was interviewed on the news cast I watched said something to the effect that "you could cause the same harm with a fork or a pencil."
Well, sure, who hasn't been stabbed by a student with a pencil? (The last time that happened to me, the student actually drew blood. Mercifully, I had a non-pansy for a principal. The little darlin' was promptly expelled and the police were summoned to school as well. I really do miss that principal)
A public school is not to be confused with a place of worship. Any object of religious significance (along with MP3 players and other electronic devices) that creates a learning disruption should be stored in the student's locker.
Or at least, put somewhere that I can't see it.
Interestingly, whenever I see a woman wearing an Islamic veil the men and boys in her group are always in normal American clothes. I would guess that there is little if any specific dress proscribed for Muslim men, so the chances are that a man in foreign garb is probably not a Muslim.
Are you Sikhs ?
You are kidding, right? I am Messianic Jewish.
