Mormons, U.S. officials seek way around Swiss missionary restriction
CNN ^ | Dec. 16, 2010 | Kelly Marshall Smoot

Because of changes in Swiss immigration and labor laws, the Mormon church and other religious groups soon will be unable to send any non-European missionaries to Switzerland.

But Mormon leaders and some U.S. government officials are hoping to find a way around that change in policy.

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officials issued a statement on Tuesday saying Mormons have "a long history in Switzerland dating back to 1850. We hope a solution can be found that allows missionaries, regardless of their country of origin to serve the Swiss people."

A group of 13 Mormon members of Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid drafted a letter in August asking Swiss officials to reconsider their decision, especially as it applies to Mormon missionaries.

"We earnestly petition the Swiss government to reconsider this decision and to work with us and the LDS Church to find a solution which would permit LDS missionaries to continue to perform their missionary service in Switzerland as they have done since 1850," states the letter from Sens. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho; Orrin Hatch, R-Utah; Robert Bennett, R-Utah; and Reid, D-Nevada; and nine members of the House of Representatives.

The Swiss ambassador in Washington, Urs Ziswiler, said in response to the letter that the ban is the result of a 2002 change in Swiss immigration and labor laws that makes it easier for European nationals to find work in Switzerland and harder for everyone else, including missionaries...

From the article: A group of 13 Mormon members of Congress, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid drafted a letter in August asking Swiss officials to reconsider their decision, especially as it applies to Mormon missionaries.

(It's these kinds of things that we see why the Mormon church leaders appreciate having Harry Reid firmly behind them...and shows why BYU invited Reid to be their all-student, all-faculty speaker three years ago).

I thought lds “follow the rules” of the land. It certainly appears that immigration laws into and out of the USA are of no interest to them.

Referencing post #1, summarized, what do the "entry threads" for the "Posted articles of the year" (re: Lds missionaries) say?

Top responded to thread:

They will be reluctant to tell you (that)...
* ...the God they worship was not always God.
* ...they believe Jesus Christ is the spirit brother of Satan
* ...according to Mormonism, Jesus Christ was a polygamist.
* ...for at least half a century church leaders were teaching that Adam was really God and the only God with whom we have to do. [Note: Brigham Young himself publicly taught this for over 20 years!]
* ...Brigham Young, who held the office of President of the Mormon church longer than any other man, taught that men must practice polygamy in order to become Gods.
* ...the Book of Mormon fails to contain...Mormon doctrine.
* ...about their secret temple ceremonies which, until April 1990, portrayed Christian ministers as hirelings of Satan. Nor will they tell you about the sacred underwear they are wearing which, they believe, actually protects them.
* ...Mormon leaders have taught that Jesus was conceived by way of a sexual relationship between God and Mary.
* ...they believe the bible has been corrupted throughout the centuries and cannot be trusted fully by itself.
* ...the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants, which they claim to be both sacred and without error, contradict each other many times.
* ...they use Christian terms with Mormon meanings.
* ...in order to gain entrance into the highest form of Mormon heaven, the Celestial kingdom, you must accept Joseph Smith, Jr. as a prophet of god. Faith in Jesus alone, Mormonism teaches, will force you to spend eternity in a lower form of heaven: [Note: Outside the presence of Heavenly Father, I might add]
* ...their founder, Joseph Smith, Jr. made many false prophecies which, according to the Bible, would classify him as a false prophet rather than a true prophet of God.

#2 Thread activity:

1.We're Not Trying to Convert You
2.The Bible is insufficient [Note: Even though the Lds church has consistently offered it ALONE as a gift in TV commercials!]
3.We're the only true Christians [Note: Lds label all other churches and Christian in those churches as “apostates” – like Muslims who call Christians “infidels”]
4.We're the only true church [Note: see Doctrine & Covenants 1:30, which teaches this]
5.We have a living prophet [Note: Christians do as well – His Name is Jesus Christ...see Hebrews 1:1-2 which teaches this]
6.The Book of Mormon is scripture
7.You're saved by works [Note: see 2 Nephi 25:23 in Book of Mormon which teaches this]
8.People can become gods [Note: Surprisingly the Book of Mormon doesn't teach this!]
9.You're born again by becoming a Mormon
10.Temple marriage is required for eternal life [Note: Mormons define “eternal life” as highest degree of glory – only degree in which a person lives in Heavenly Father's presence forever...singles who've never been married; non-Mormons need not “apply”]

#3 Activity thread:

1. God the Father has a body of flesh and bones. In truth the Book of Mormon teaches that God is a spirit (Mosiah 15:1-5; Alma 18:26-29, 19:25-27, 22:8-11, 31:15-38). Note in Alma 31 that the speaker who says God is a spirit is not corrected by the alleged prophet involved.
2. The Father, Son and Holy Ghost are separate and distinct Gods.
3. They are one God in that they are "one in purpose."
4. God the Father was once a man like us and progressed until he became God. In reality the Book of Mormon says God has always been God from eternity to eternity (Mosiah 3:5; 2 Nephi 27:23, 29:9; Moroni 7:22, 8:18; Mormon 9:9, 19).
5. There are three levels in heaven.
6. We can progress and become Gods with "all the power, glory, dominion, and knowledge" the Father and Son have.
7. The elaborate priesthoods and organization in present day Mormonism. For example, there is no mention by name of the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood, there are no deacons mentioned at all, there are no ordinations to any priesthood and in Moroni 6:1 those who appear to hold a priesthood office (by the present day criteria) are baptized after they show works worthy of it.
8. Our spirits and the spirit of Jesus Christ were born in the pre-existence (a pre-mortal life).
9. The "new and everlasting covenant", temple marriage and the practice of polygamy, as taught in D&C 132. In fact the practice of polygamy is condemned by the present day Mormon Church and by the Book of Mormon (Jacob 2:24, 27; Mosiah 11:2; Ether 10:5).
10. The teaching that matter is eternal and all Jesus Christ did in his creation was to organize and form it.
11. Vicarious work for the dead as now done in Mormon temples. In reality the Book of Mormon rules out such a practice (2 Nephi 26:11; Alma 5:28, 34:31-35; Mosiah 16:5, 11, 26:25-27).
12. God is married and there is a mother in heaven.
13. The sacred (to the Mormons) temple endowment ceremonies that Mormonism teaches are needed to pass through the veil to spend eternity with God.
14. That Jesus Christ atoned for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane. In fact the Book of Mormon does not even mention the Garden of Gethsemane. It says Jesus Christ died for all men on the cross (see 2 Nephi 9:5 1 Nephi 11:33; 3 Nephi 27:14).

If they’ve been established in the country for that long, don’t they have enough of a presence to evangelize from within? Why do they need to bring in people from foreign countries?

How many miles on the engine? How long do you intend to keep the car? I say buy four really good ties and save the best one you are replacing as the spare. Then the really good tires are the last tires you’ll buy for the car before you get rid of it for a new car.

Isn't it great that we have a bunch of cheerleaders for limiting freedom of religion in . . . Switzerland?

Most of whom would not dare openly advocate the same thing for Muzzies in our own country out of fear of getting their throats slit.

As usual, mormons claiming the rules don't apply to them....because....

According to the article, missionaryin' is "gainful employment"....ROTFL!

I guess "gainful" means pouring tithing money into LDS corporation coffers.

What? Swiss homeowner gardens need help, too?

(Couldn't they just give gardeners most business in Switzerland instead of Lds missionaries coming in & taking away local jobs?)

[Before others comment minus knowing the context of this comment...ya gotta know that Vigilanteman often defends Lds missionaries -- and Lds generally -- 'cause some Mormon missionaries came over & helped his own garden...certainly a nice gesture...but just think...if Lds missionaries did that on an ongoing basis everywhere...why wouldn't they cut into local gardener job jumpstarts?]
