Birth of a Mormon Tradition: Jello!
Keepapitchinin ^ | December 13, 2010 | Ardis E. Parshall

I don’t recall ever being served, at home or at a ward function, green gelatin with shredded carrots set in it. I have been served – and have served – all kinds of gelatin concoctions – most of them quite good (raspberries and sour cream, mmmm! cranberries and chopped walnuts, mmmm!), and others … well …

I remember Jell-o’s short-lived 1960s flirtation with vegetable flavored gelatin. Yeah, I can hear your “Ewww!” already. But they were good! If you’re going to put shredded carrots in Jell-o, doesn’t it make more sense to use celery-flavored gelatin than orange or lime? (The four flavors marketed were celery, mixed vegetable, seasoned tomato, and Italian salad. And they were good, whether you believe it or not!)

As I’ve mined the old church magazines for Keepa ideas, I’ve kept an eye out for gelatin recipes and discussions, and after a careful search, I can now announce what I think is the earliest documented gelatin sighting in Mormon history. Woot! Shake the tambourines and blow the horns! It’s the birth of a Mormon tradition!

Browsing thru the recipes at the link (only after after I posted a comment, as per freeper tradition), I looks like the Mormons used the same recipe, a long time back.

For all I know, it may be in a Betty Crocker cookbook, too. I'd bet good money it made mention in "Reader's Digest".

This guy;

***I need to invite the posters on this thread to my house for a real Pollack meal.***

Can I bring my specialty Ambrosia jello from my mama’s recipies??

To partially set Cherry Jello add...

1 can of drained fruit cocktail.
1 cut up apple.
1 cup pecans
1 cup coconut
Allow to set up, stir and add
1 carton of coolwhip or whipped cream!

I pesonally leave out the apple an add a second cup of pecans.

I’ve been a Mormon for about 16 years and never once have I seen the green jello with shredded carrots! It sounds gross but I’ll give it a try!

Infidel! Moloch will not accept your gelatinous sacrifice without the carrot shavings in it.

Pierogi are Potato Ravioli. ‘Nuff said.

OTOH, how silly would it be to say, “Eh, pasta is still pasta.”

My mother, when I was growing up in Indiana, used to make a lime gelatin salad with finely shredded cabbage and a little minced onion. We would top it with a bit of salad dressing. Really, really good.

Not disputing your general idea, that Italian food is healthier than Polish food, but for the record, here are the longevity records for some of my Polish relatives:

My mother died at 85
One of her sisters died at 85
Another of her sisters died at 93
Her oldest sister died at 95

The two who died in their 80’s were lifetime heavy smokers. The two who died in their 90’s didn’t smoke.

They all ate Polish food regularly.
