Did fellow Mormons cover up officer's baby molestations?
Idaho Statesman ^ | Dec. 12, 2010 | Patrick Orr

...As many as 15 people who knew...Boise police officer...confessed to molesting babies...face no criminal charges.

...deputies...determined...leaders of...Latter-day Saints congregation that Stephen R. Young attended can’t be charged because of...clergy privilege law.

SNIP

...Young turned himself in...March 2... That was about two months after church officials say they first talked to Young about his crimes.

SNIP

...Ada County prosecutors say...Steve Nelson sexually abused as many as four children over a 30-year period...Nelson confessed to molesting one child to LDS officials, who learned of the crime from the victim but did not report it.

More than 20 years later, Nelson pleaded guilty...In 2009, the woman he...abused as a preteenager...caught him molesting a 3-year-old girl, according to court records.

Before sending Nelson to...prison...Judge Darla Williamson told him: “I...don’t understand...why the church didn’t require that law enforcement be involved with you. Possibly...we would have at least one less victim.”

...Tim Ryan is serving...probation...after pleading guilty...to...sexual abuse...Detectives say...the case...was dropped when the girl’s family wouldn’t cooperate with investigators. About the time the case was dropped, prosecutors said, the girl met with Ryan and an LDS bishop.

The victim told the Idaho Statesman last week that she had to attend a meeting with an LDS bishop and Ryan where she was asked to forgive Ryan....

“...I was really scared...They wanted me to forgive him. I was 14. I was put on the spot. What are you going to say?”

SNIP

...investigators and...prosecutors say Young could have abused as many as 20...victims over a 30-year period... Prosecutors say Young’s victims were infants or babies, 21 months of age or younger...all...family members or children of friends.

SNIP

Young’s wife first mentions...LDS Church in a...journal entry...says Young “was relying on (the bishop). He said (the bishop) made a lot of calls to keep him from going to jail.”...

Colofornian, You fail to recognized the bottom line was to tread carefully as so this person did not slip through a loop hole and pin him down

****

It was efforts of the church and its leaders that resulted in this matter coming to the attention of the authorities,” said Randy Austin, an attorney specializing in child abuse cases for the church in Salt Lake City. “From the moment Mr. Young confessed, church leaders took every precaution they legally could to protect victims and the public.

“And church leaders avoided violating the clergy privilege — a breach which could have tainted the evidence against Mr. Young and jeopardized his prosecution.”

Amazing how an organization that brags to the world about having no paid clergy, a fact made clear given how little many Mormons know about their own faith, all the sudden finds it has clergy.

Convenience is a LDS trade mark, from timely revelation about Polygamy and black membership to having clergy as needed.

A little honesty would be appreciated.

Now that's ironic...

I think these are actually a laugh out loud. I mean really what happens if your companion is sick and unable to get out of bed, does that mean you can't get up either. My gosh what if you have to go to the bathroom, oh wait you are never to be alone so I guess you have to wake them up to go with you........you could get sick from all the contradictions here.

Just a few that are LOL.

Sleep in the same bedroom as your companion.

Do not sleep in the same bed as your companion.

Do not arise before your companion.

Legal definition: clergy [ˈklɜːdʒɪ]

n pl -gies

The collective body of men and women ordained as religious ministers

lds do not reach this definition, so again the question is are they clergy?

...said Randy Austin, an attorney specializing in child abuse cases for the church in Salt Lake City.

First of all...CC has asked you now twice...how often do child abuse cases arise among the Lds to have an attorney who "specializes" in these cases?

Secondly, Szonian pointed out in post #39 that the "clergy privilege" really only applied to know more than 6 individuals representing the official Mormon church (3 part of the Bishopric; 3 part of the Stake High Council). Szonian also added his wife; but she wasn't privvy to "clergy privilege" in my opinion.

The articles from AP to Idaho Statesman to news broadcasts have all said that "up to 15" members knew -- which means "up to 9" had no "clergy privilege."

THEY were not under obligation that could have "tainted the evidence." The sheriff's office could have begun their own quiet investigation while the disciplinary process was being carried out; and they especially could have been monitoring his contact or potential contact with babies/toddlers.

Therefore, your arguments really ONLY apply to SIX individuals, not 15.

As for not "slip[ping] through a loop hole and pin[ning] him down" -- I understand that was an important dimension. Certainly, the 6 Szonian mentioned could have operated as you prescribed.

But what you don't seem to give credence to is that we operate in a world with parallel God-given authorities, which includes the Romans 13 authorities. The dimension of not being able to pin him down needed to be balanced by the dimension that he not create additional victims.

From the excerpted article: ...Ada County prosecutors say...Steve Nelson sexually abused as many as four children over a 30-year period...Nelson confessed to molesting one child to LDS officials, who learned of the crime from the victim but did not report it.

Article excerpt cont'd: More than 20 years later, Nelson pleaded guilty...In 2009, the woman he...abused as a preteenager...caught him molesting a 3-year-old girl, according to court records.

Article excerpt cont'd: Before sending Nelson to...prison...Judge Darla Williamson told him: “I...don’t understand...why the church didn’t require that law enforcement be involved with you. Possibly...we would have at least one less victim.”

It was this same lame game in this above case that wound up leading to a 3 yo being sexually abused by an Lds member!

You have been challenged dozens upon dozens of times to back up your blanket accusations with a specific example.

Puleeze. Anti-Mormons have no interest in such dialogue. With them it’s just turn the page to the next thing we can regurgitate or pretend is an issue.

My “blanket accusations” as you call them are all easily looked up and learned about. Easily. I will not waste my time jabbering back and forth with what is little more than a wall that has no intention of listening.

The truth about all of the supposed “issues” these FR anti-Mormon gang members is easily found. IF you really desire to know. Then it is up to you. The truth awaits.
