Chapter III

Of God's Eternal Decree

I. God from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass;[1] yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin,[2] nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures; nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.[3]

II. Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed conditions;[4] yet has He not decreed anything because He foresaw it as future, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions.[5]

III. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angels[6] are predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death.[7]

IV. These angels and men, thus predestinated, and foreordained, are particularly and unchangeably designed, and their number so certain and definite, that it cannot be either increased or diminished.[8]

V. Those of mankind that are predestinated unto life, God, before the foundation of the world was laid, according to His eternal and immutable purpose, and the secret counsel and good pleasure of His will, has chosen, in Christ, unto everlasting glory,[9] out of His mere free grace and love, without any foresight of faith, or good works, or perseverance in either of them, or any other thing in the creature, as conditions, or causes moving Him thereunto;[10] and all to the praise of His glorious grace.[11]

VI. As God has appointed the elect unto glory, so has He, by the eternal and most free purpose of His will, foreordained all the means thereunto.[12] Wherefore, they who are elected, being fallen in Adam, are redeemed by Christ,[13] are effectually called unto faith in Christ by His Spirit working in due season, are justified, adopted, sanctified,[14] and kept by His power, through faith, unto salvation.[15] Neither are any other redeemed by Christ, effectually called, justified, adopted, sanctified, and saved, but the elect only.[16]

VII. The rest of mankind God was pleased, according to the unsearchable counsel of His own will, whereby He extends or withholds mercy, as He pleases, for the glory of His sovereign power over His creatures, to pass by; and to ordain them to dishonor and wrath for their sin, to the praise of His glorious justice.[17]

VIII. The doctrine of this high mystery of predestination is to be handled with special prudence and care,[18] that men, attending the will of God revealed in His Word, and yielding obedience thereunto, may, from the certainty of their effectual vocation, be assured of their eternal election.[19] So shall this doctrine afford matter of praise, reverence, and admiration of God;[20] and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation to all that sincerely obey the Gospel.[21]

JOH 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. EPH 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. PRO 16:4 The Lord hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

[12] 1PE 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied. EPH 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. 2TH 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth.

[13] 1TH 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. TIT 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

[14] ROM 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. ROM 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. JOH 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 10:26 But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. 1JO 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

[18] ROM 9:20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? DEU 29:29 The secret things belong unto the Lord our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

[21] ROM 11:5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. 20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 2PE 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. ROM 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. LUK 10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

That is usually interpreted, I believe, as meaning God is the CAUSE of sin. In a deterministic theology, God makes people commit sin, then judges them for doing what he forced them to do.

Prior to eating the forbidden fruit we were without sin, but thereafter we are fallen sinful creatures in need of a Savior. God put the tree of knowledge in the garden. Doesn't this mean God is the cause of sin.

The final straw that forced me to leave the Baptist Church I had been a member of for 5 years was when I was told that God decided what sins he wanted me to commit and then made me do them.

Do we have the power on our own to go against our nature to sin?

If God knows from the beginning who will do what then it follows that God knows who He will save.

We sin because we like it, and because we cannot free ourselves. But Jesus came to set the captives free, and that is the Good News.

OTOH, if God gives us the right to make real choices, then we sin because it is our evil nature at work.

That, of course, presumes your premise to be correct. If, OTOH, we are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness, as the scriptures tells us we are, then God gives those who are slaves to righteousness boundaries. There are things that will cause believers to be taken home early.

I would call attention to the words of Job:

Life for Christians isn't a magical tiptoe through the TULIPs. We share in the same burdens that everyone else does. And all of this comes from God. But for Christians, even those evil things that are brought our way work together for our good.

I would distinguish between evil events and evil desires. “Evil” events - painful ones, often caused by the sin of another - are often a part of God’s sovereign will. There was nothing pleasant for Israel about being invaded, but God brought it about. When my Dad died when I was 14, it wasn’t pleasant, but as I look back 40 years later, I know it fit God’s timing.

The evil within us is the result of the Fall, and God accepted it would happen as part of his will, but he doesn’t put the evil desires within us. When I was told that God makes me sin, it conflicts with Paul:

” 1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?”

That man has a sinful nature should be painfully obvious to all, but that doesn’t mean every choice man makes is sin. A non-christian woman who loves her child isn’t sinning in her love, and a man who gives to the poor may be doing so from good motives, even as a non-christian. Yet the idea that man can be good enough to win God’s approval is ridiculous. One only needs to look around, or examine one’s own life, to realize there is ample evil to justify damnation.

Ancient man was smarter than modern man. Ancient man KNEW he deserved God’s wrath. Modern man, as CS Lewis noted in ‘God in the Dock’, wants to decide if God is good enough for us. And we deserve damnation for that conceit...

The chief aim of man is to glorify God; to love Him with all our hearts, souls and minds. Every choice that we do should be related to this chief aim, just as every thing that Christ did was to glorify the Father. Anything outside of this chief aim does not bring glory to God and is sin.

If this sounds self serving of God, then we must remember that God is perfect love, joy, peace, etc. Quite frankly, what's not to love and serve? The reason we quibble internally with this chief aim and fail to do it is due to our sin nature which rebels against it. We don't like the idea of perfect love, perfect joy, etc.

If this is so, why are particular names mentioned in verse 13 - “As it is written, “Jacob I loved but Esau I hated.”?

Romans 9:18 - “So then he has mercy on WHOMever he wills, and he hardens WHOMever he wills.”
