Pope puts stamp on church future with new cardinals (2 Americans elevated)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Benedict installed 24 new Roman Catholic cardinals from around the world on Saturday in his latest batch of appointments that could include his successor as leader of the 1.2 billion member church.

As their national delegations cheered, the men were elevated to their new rank as top advisers to the pope at a solemn ceremony in St Peter's Basilica known as a consistory.

Each of the 24 men swore their loyalty to him, to future popes and to the church, even if it meant giving their lives.

Twenty of the new cardinals are under 80 and thus eligible under church rules to take part in the conclave that chooses a

successor after the death or resignation of the current pope.

The new cardinals include Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington D.C., who, as a senior figure in the American capital, will likely play a leading role in the U.S. church's response to the sexual abuse scandal.

At a pre-consistory meeting on Friday, the Vatican told bishops they would have to take more responsibility to prevent sexual abuse of children by priests and said it was preparing new guidelines for bishops on how to deal with the sexual abuse, including cooperation with local authorities.

The German pope has now named 50 of the 121 electors who can pick his successor from among their own ranks, raising the possibility that the next pontiff will be a conservative in Benedict's own image.

In his homily before he bestowed each new cardinal with the red hat of their office, known as a berretta, Benedict told them their role was "not to be served, but to serve" and urged them to shun "the logic of power."

The Cardinal and His Cassock

By longstanding tradition, Gammarelli -- tailor to the Popes and most of the Sacred College for the last four centuries -- permits all of one person outside the shop to see a new red-hat's robes before Consistory Morning: the cardinal-designate's priest-secretary.

Here, however, in a rare glimpse captured by Ann Rodgers of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cardinal-designate Donald Wuerl of Washington showed off the long-awaited "reds" in advance of his elevation today.

Made by Barbiconi, the tailor behind Wuerl's new threads came out of retirement to sew the new cardinal's robes -- in Wuerl's early Roman days as a seminarian and priest-secretary to Cardinal John Wright, Gino Barbiconi stitched his cassocks, returning to the task for this most auspicious of occasions:

On another "Scarlet Fever" note, in the run-up to the weekend's elevation rites, both Wuerl and the church's Wisconsin-born "chief justice" -- Cardinal-designate Raymond Burke -- gave interviews to Vatican Radio.

Consistory for the Creation of New Cardinals 2010

As announced a month ago, this morning the Holiness of our Lord Pope Benedict XVI is holding an ordinary public Consistory for the creation of new cardinals. As mentioned then, among those raised to the sacred purple are two great friends of both the usus antiquior and a reform of the reform, Their Excellencies Archbishops Raymond Burke and Malcolm Ranjith, as well as Domenico Bartolucci, the former maestro of the Sistine Chapel (see a full list here).

Here are some impressions of this morning's celebration.

The ceremony is begun with a fanfare from the inner loggia of St. Peter's Basilica:

The Holy Father pronounces the formula of creation:

Itaque auctoritate omnipotentis Dei, sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli ac Nostra hos venerabiles Fratres creamus et sollemniter enuntiamus Sanctæ
Romanæ Ecclesiæ Cardinales.

Cardinal Amato delivering the address of homage on behalf of the newly created cardinals:

The Gospel is sung:

The new cardinals swear their oath of fealty towrds the Supreme Pontiff and his successors:

Now the Holy Father imposes the red birettas and assigns the titular churches, using the formula:

Ad honorem Dei omnipotentis et sanctorum Apostolorum Petri et Pauli, tibi committimus Titulum (vel Diaconiam) N. In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. R. Amen.

You can find a list of the titular churches assigned here.

Cardinal Ranjith:

Cardinal Burke, who was assigned S. Agata de’ Goti, the former titular church of the great Papal Master of Ceremonies Enrico Dante and, I might add, of the great bishop of my own diocese, Konrad Count of Preysing, as well as of Giuseppe Pecci, the brother of pope Leo XIII, and of Ercole Consalvi, the famous Secretary of State of Pius VII:

Cardinal Marx, the Pope's successor as Archbishop of Munich and Freising:

Cardinal Bartolucci:

The new cardinals exchange the sign of peace with the other cardinals:

A late news report but one that should not surprise anyone. From Life Site News.

Catholic Backer of Pro-Abortion Obama to Attend Cardinal Burke’s Designation

In what is an intriguing irony for pro-life Catholic activists, President Barack Obama announced yesterday the official delegation representing him at a ceremony elevating two American Archbishops to Cardinals.

Obama will send Miguel Diaz, the U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, as the lead delegate for the White House to the ceremony.

Diaz was a staunch defender of then-candidate Barack Obama despite his radical pro-abortion positions that violate the teachings of the Catholic Church. He will attend the elevation of Archbishop Raymond Burke, who has been one of the most outspoken Catholic leaders on the issue of pro-abortion politicians.

Vatican Chief Justice Archbishop Raymond Burke, formerly Archbishop of St. Louis, Missouri, will be honored with membership in the College of Cardinals, as designated by Pope Benedict XVI.

Diaz, who was a theology professor at St. John’s University and the College of Saint Benedict in Collegeville, Minnesota before becoming ambassador, is reportedly pro-life but he served as a member of Obama’s Catholic advisory board during his presidential campaign.

Obama isn’t alone in earning Diaz’s support, as he also endorsed pro-abortion Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius and her nomination to become Obama’s health secretary.

Diaz was one of several Catholic college professors to support her bid, which prompted Cardinal Newman Society president Patrick Reilly to say they were “giving comfort and aid to those whose stated goals are to advance policies directly opposed to Catholic teachings on life issues.”

“Given Gov. Sebelius’s abortion record and the concerns of her own bishop, it is sad that some of her strongest supporters are speaking out from their platforms on Catholic campuses,” he said.

Diaz was also a member of the speakers bureau for the fake pro-life Catholic organization Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, a pro-Obama front group that was repeatedly criticized during the presidential election for deceiving voters on Obama’s pro-abortion position.

The group eventually came under fire from Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, who said it had “done a disservice to the Church, confused the natural priorities of Catholic social teaching, undermined the progress pro-lifers have made, and provided an excuse for some Catholics to abandon the abortion issue instead of fighting within their parties and at the ballot box to protect the unborn.”

Catholic writer Deal Hudson commented on Diaz’s nomination last year and said it would be “interesting” to watch Diaz as ambassador.

What is interesting now is that Diaz will watch as Burke climbs the ranks of the Catholic Church after speaking out more so than most Catholic leaders on the pro-abortion politicians Diaz supports.

Burke is known as the Catholic official who said 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry would not be allowed to receive communion at any church in St. Louis because of his staunch pro-abortion position.

Then, during the 2008 presidential election, Burke said all Catholics, including politicians, should not receive communion if they are pro-abortion.

Communion should be denied to pro-abortion politicians “until they have reformed their lives,” he said, in the interview with Radici Christiane magazine.

“Receiving the Body and Blood of Christ unworthily is a sacrilege,” he warned. “If it is done deliberately in mortal sin it is a sacrilege.”

Burke discussed “public officials who, with knowledge and consent, uphold actions that are against the Divine and Eternal moral law.”

“For example, if they support abortion, which entails the taking of innocent and defenseless human lives. A person who commits sin in this way should be publicly admonished in such a way as to not receive Communion until he or she has reformed his life,” he told the publication.

Burke also issued a challenge to ministers to make sure they are not providing the sacrament to pro-abortion lawmakers who have not repented from their position.

In his statement in 2008, Burke said not denying communion makes a bad witness to other Catholics and the public.

“If we have a public figure who is openly and deliberately upholding abortion rights and receiving the Eucharist, what will the average person think?” he explained. “He or she could come to believe that it up to a certain point it is okay to do away with an innocent life in the mother’s womb.”

Diaz is, according to my definition of “pro-abortion,” pro-abortion.

It is utter nonsense to say “I am pro-life,” and support pro-abortion people for elective or appointive office.

Archbishop Burke has PROVEN beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is a mortal sin for a minister of Communion to give Communion to a person who is publicly pro-abortion:

http://tinyurl.com/canon915

Which means that Cardinal Wuerl, who gives Communion to pro-abortion politicians, is "obstinately persisting in a situation of grave sin," and therefore must be denied Communion, according to Canon 915.

Why is the Pope making a man who is ineligible to receive Communion into a Cardinal?

I love the sound of it too! Especially because of this:
