The on-going "Who Killed More" Debate: Muslims or Christians
11/10/2010 | Peter from Rutland

I get in way too many arguments with liberals. I recently cross-posted an article from American Thinker on my Facebook page (http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/11/de_facto_shariah_law_in_americ.html).

One of my more liberal friends made the usual statement that Christians have killed more people than Muslims, which I find VERY hard to believe. It's pretty obvious that Aetheists have killed far more (Hitler, Stalin, Mao) but we get back to the argument: muslims or christians?

I've searched the 'net with no real definite answer. Anyone?

The Thirty Years War involved many nations, but two of the opposing players were Catholic Spain and Catholic France.

Yes, religious differences played some part. But this was largely a political struggle over the Holy Roman Empire (which wasn't Holy, wasn't Roman, and wasn't an empire).

I have a difficult time defining Catholicism as Christian. The teachings certainly do not coincide with the biblical Christianity I find in the Bible.

What a coincidence! Whenever I see a comment like that, I have a hard time not recalling Jesus' story of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector!

The Thirty Years War involved many nations, but two of the opposing players were Catholic Spain and Catholic France.

And, of course, the Protestant principalities in Germany and elsewhere.

The causes and motives of the wars were, of course, complex -- but religious fervor was a major factor, and also contributed to the ferocity of the killing.

The dynamic of Protestantism vs. Catholicism was a major factor in Switzerland, France, England, and elsewhere. It drove the war between Britain and Spain. It drove the English Civil War.

You simply can't separate religious controversy from much of the conflict in the 16th-17th centuries.

Yeah, like Catholicism, the tax collector considered his goods works as being accepted by God — but they were as filthy rags. The old sinner recognized his only hope was the mercy of God and not good works like the eucharist, alms, sprinkling, and church attendance on Christmas and Easter. The tax collector probably prayed to Mary and counted rosary beads in his attempt to gain righteousness as well. None of those things mean beans to God.

Wow.... you’re basically saying “God, I thank you that I am not like that Catholic over there....” You really don’t see what you’re doing, do you?

Not at all, I’m saying I’m saved by the grace of God and only by His mercy. I’m saying works cannot save anyone. No self-righteous person, no matter how religious he is will ever get into heaven. I’m saying the teachings of the Catholic church make it all but impossible to be saved because it’s attached to the Pharisee and detached from the tax collector’s attitude. I know I’m a rotten sinner who deserved hell and was saved only by God’s grace, certainly not by any church, denomination or religion.

depends if you count the pious Muslim Tamerlane or not. Timur/Tamarlane

Tamerlane is probably remembered most for his massacres and brutality. 80 000 were slain at Delhi (many of them flayed and burned alive) and the city itself did not recover until almost a century later, whole irrigation systems and agriculture centres were destroyed beyond repair, towers were made from the skulls of his enemies, at Sabzawar live captives were cemented between clay and brick to create minarets. He was responsible for ruining trade in the region and reducing populations by sometimes staggering amounts but despite this Tamerlane appears to have indulged in the arts and was much loved by his followers. Tamerlane died in 1405.
