Catholic Word of the Day: FIRE OF PURGATORY, 11-01-10
CatholicReference.net ^ | 11-01-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

FIRE OF PURGATORY

The external source of suffering in purgatory besides the temporary deprivation of the vision of God. Although many sacred writers, interpreting St. Paul (I Corinthians 3:15), assume a physical fire, the Church's official teaching speaks only of "purifying punishments" and not of purifying fire (Denzinger 1304).

....what do these spiritual measures really do? Could someone seriously bring these get-out-of-jail cards to the Pearly Gates? "You can imagine the cartoon that would make," admits Rev. Pierre Ingram, director of priestly formation for the Companions of the Cross in Ottawa.

In fact, the rules and language around indulgences were modernized by Pope Paul VI in 1967.

"Modern people just do not take kindly to this very minute accounting system. There needs to be simplicity and personal freedom as well. It used to be measured in things like, '200 days off Purgatory,' which no one took literally because -- you know -- what's a day in Purgatory?" said Father Ingram. "But it was an attempt to show an order of magnitude." According to church rules, a penitent can seek the indulgence for himself or a deceased person by going to confession, receiving communion, distancing himself from sinfulness, praying for the pope's intentions....

We’ll put the skulls in the flowerbeds for Dia de los Muertos, since we didn’t get them out for Hallowe’en. Only the cotton-floss spiderweb and the 3-foot purple foil tarantula ;-).

I almost want to go to the Tienda Latina for authentic Mexican sweets, but I just can’t take all that sugar. Maybe we could make whole-grain skeleton pancakes.

God Almighty and the Lord Jesus Christ only spoke about Heaven and Hell. I have read many articles by 4th through 16th century RC saints and the torment of Purgatory that they describe always resembles the same descriptions that the Lord Jesus Christ taught about in the Gospels.

I am saved by the grace of God; my salvation is assured by God and the cross of Christ who died for ALL my sins; Christ was a Ransom as the Lamb of God; and I am forgiven of all my sins by His completed works on the cross and the glory of His resurrection; why then, given these truths from the Bible; would God wish to further punish forgiven believers inside a torment... Christ bore all sins on the cross; His cross work was not so small that He could not provide complete forgiveness to all sins.

But the Bible talks about Purgatory. It just doesn’t name it. Just like the Bible doesn’t name reformation sunday. LOL!
