It gets trashed because it is as close to the gospel as you can get and the sinfulness of man (even Christians) cannot stand the light. Those who are ordained to eternal life are the ones who believe. We don't believe and THEN are ordained to eternal life.

The closer you get to the core of Christianity the more you are reviled. Notice how in the Reformed/Evangelical vs. Catholic debates we are personally attacked. In contrast we just point out the Romanist errors.
