Well for the "legalists" among us as long as you made it in to hear "the gospel reading" and stayed through communion.. .it would be credited to your account as not breaking a commandment..you kept the "day holy" and would not have to confess ya missed mass..
Thus the late comers in the back of the church that rush out after communion
LOL
LOL!!! Me too.
And we weren't some of those who walked out after communion as if mass was over yet. We toughed it out to the bitter end.
No, I take that back...
The GOOD news was when the weather was so bad that they either canceled church or said that if you missed because of the weather it wasn't counted a s a mortal sin. I forgot exactly how they worded it on the radio, but not having to go at all was the good news.
I guess their holy Sacrament of Marriage isn’t really holy.
So they must be leading new couples into sin by marrying them.
It's beyond the comprehension of a group so fixated with numbers that they have to brag about it as if might makes right.
Wonder if they keep as good a count on Catholic Schools they keep closing.
They never ever closed our church. Priests lived right next door in the rectory. ‘If we can get to church, so can you’.
That was for school, also, school never closed. Nuns right there.
Yours must have been more liberal than mine! I don’t remember that happening. But then it could be my memory.
I did not like those holydays. We had off but still had to be in church with our class.
We live in NY and even though the priests still held mass, the obligation to get there wasn’t there. There were times it was just too dangerous to go if you had any distance to travel and when it’s snowing like it can with lake effect, it’s not good to be on the streets when they’re trying to plow. You can get stuck for keeps if you’re not careful.
Ah! Driving. We could walk to our local parish.
There IS the caucus provision for any who feel their voice is being drowned out or don’t want any objections raised to their opinions.
IIRC, the criteria is whether or not a state of emergency is called. Once it’s illegal to be out on the streets, the church usually waives the obligation.
I am impressed with your documentation skills. If you would ever like to organize my home files please let me know. :O)
Details, details......
I never missed Mass. The first time I was 21 and all I kept thinking about, if I stepped off the curb and hit before Saturday, I’d be going to hell.
It gets trashed because it is as close to the gospel as you can get and the sinfulness of man (even Christians) cannot stand the light. Those who are ordained to eternal life are the ones who believe. We don't believe and THEN are ordained to eternal life.
WOW, metmom, what a find! This from Pope 1?? ..If I weren’t told differently all the time, I would think Peter talked more like a Protestant than a Catholic...
Well, they couldn't pay me enough to have to monitor ALL the RF threads to keep what SHOULD be grown-ups from turning it into a virtual Inquisition. It can't hurt if we remind each other from time-to-time about the rules, although some people just have to "wait until Daddy gets home".
This may be slightly off the topic but, then it isn't. How many times have you been told that Catholics are taught Scripture during Mass attendance, and know Scripture and been called "morons" because you disagree with the "educated Catholic" interpretation?
Last night I was watching Bill O'Reilly, an educated man and a practicing Catholic who claims to attend Mass on a weekly basis. No "moron" he!!!
One segment of the show concerned the Humanist advertisements currently running which show how terrible Christianity is. The ad in question concerned 1 Timothy 2:12 I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to keep silent. to prove how Christianity discriminates against women and "invited" them to join the "Humanists".
O'Reilly was discussing this with the "Culture Warriors" and at first he said it was Old Testament and, after questioning the "Culture Warrior" ladies, corrected it to the New Testament.
Not one of them were aware it was a Letter from Paul (the big "I") to Timothy expressing his own practice and in no way reflected the Gospel preached by Jesus.
I'm guessing all the years of Mass attendance and Scriptural lessons didn't sink in to O'Reilly. Is he a typical Catholic "moron"?
