Probably anti-rural bigotry. Nimrod was a hunter (a hunter after the souls of men, but still a hunter), and so the appellation originally referred to a hunter. And since most hunters are "hicks from the sticks," it came to mean a rural bumpkin.

Funny, though, how liberals never seem to object to "indigenous pipples" who hunt.

The actual name comes from the verbal root mem-re'sh-dalet meaning "to rebel;" thus Nimrod was a rebel against G-d.

I thought Nimrod was supposed to be the bravest man. We didn’t get too far into the reading,as the Reform don’t usually read the Torah on the other days of the week. I’ll have to do that. I have a question for you.I know who the Levites and the Cohens are,but who are the others you mention for the Torah readings?

He was an evil man, the first king in history, and the first man to try to build a G-dless "one world order." He threw Abraham into a fiery pit when the latter stood up to his idolatry and later initiated the "War of the Kings" in order to get back at Abraham further (he is referred to as "'Amrafel" in Genesis 14). In short he was one of the wickedest men in history and the prototype of all who followed him.

It simply means "third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, concluder" (maftir) and "conclusion" (haftarah).

Much of this is in the Oral Torah. You need to study Rashi's commentary or perhaps purchase this book.

What I meant by certain Jews is that I thought they were names that had a particular meaning,like the names Cohen and Levy. I know that the Cohenim have a certain role,as do the Levites. I hope that makes more sense.

I have something else that I’d like to throw in.One of the members of my synagogue stated that Moses may have been high on some type of drug when he “thought” he heard G-d. She also referred to the Orthodox as being A-holes. I’d attend another congregation but there are no other synagogues in my immediate area. Most of them are over an hour away.

I assume you are Jewish. If so, I would like to suggest running as fast as you can away from the Reform. I am one of those (copy/paste) A-holes. Is there a Chabad House nearby? The rabbi there would at least guide you in a more positive direction.

I was shocked at her remark,and even more so when she said that Moses may have been under the influence of drugs when he heard G-d. As far as Chasidic Judaism is concerned it is far too strict for me,although I try to be as observant as I can. It can be hard because I do not live in a Jewish home;I converted to Judaism in my 20’s.The rest of my family are Lutherans. The Rabbi we have is from an Orthodox background so he has been of great help.He knows I have little to do with liberal Judaism. I like that I can wear a tallit and carry the Torah,which would be forbidden in Orthodox Judaism. Other than that I try my best.I won’t get tattooed,I won’t hunt,I rest on the Sabbath,etc. There are no other synagogues in my area.The others are an hr.away from where I live and I can’t get to the city. I pay very little mind as to what these liberal Jews say. They don’t influence me in any fashion.

When the rabbi called a man up to the bimah,it sounded like he said the number 6 in Hebrew as part of the man’s Hebrew name.The rabbi talks so fast at times that he’s not always easy to understand.

Parshat Lech-Lecha (5770)

This week we read about Abraham the first Jew. But at first glance it is not so clear what exactly this means.

There seems to be no clear explanation in the Torah as to exactly what made him a Jew or what exactly a Jew is!

Seemingly Abraham did no miracles, made no sermons, developed no religion and had few, if any, followers. He did not even see the fulfillment of the promises G-d made to him; to receive the land of Israel and have offspring as plentiful as the soil of the earth etc. So what exactly made him a Jew? And what is a Jew?

We also see that Abraham had his name changed from Avram. What is the meaning behind this?

To understand all this here is a story I just heard about Rebbe Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch the third leader of the Chabad Movement some 150 years ago in Russia (nicknamed ‘The Tzemach Tzedek’).

Since the time of Abraham, something about the Jews has always aroused the admiration, awe and ire of the non-Jews. The Good Book says it’s because we were chosen by G-d, but it’s not so clear what that means; the Jews don’t seem to be much different from everyone else and certainly not in a way that would indicate they are G-d’s chosen.

But in every generation there is at least one Jew who does clearly demonstrate this ‘chosen’ness. One was Abraham and another was the Tzemach Tzedik...
