Mormons (LDS) Know More About Bible Than Other Christians
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 09/28/2010 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 09/29/2010 3:05:05 PM PDT by zippythepinhead

Atheists and agnostics know more about major world religions than many people of faith, while Mormons can answer more Bible questions than their Catholic and mainline Protestant counterparts.

Those are among the somewhat startling conclusions about religious literacy in America the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion and Public Life drew after surveying 3,412 Americans.

Some of the multiple-choice questions were relatively simple: Where was Jesus born and who led the exodus from Egypt? What religion was Mother Teresa, what day does the Jewish Sabbath begin and what is the name of Islam’s holy book?

Others were more obscure: What is Indonesia’s dominant religion? Which Christians teach that salvation comes through faith alone?

About half the Protestants (53 percent) couldn’t correctly identify Martin Luther as the person whose writings and actions inspired the Protestant Reformation. Fewer than half of Americans (47 percent) knew the Dalai Lama is Buddhist and only 38 percent correctly associated Vishnu and Shiva with Hinduism.

John Morehead, director of the Western Institute for Intercultural Studies in Salt Lake City, had already noted religious illiteracy in the general population as well as in the evangelical community. But he did not expect Mormons to top them in their biblical fluency.

“Mormons tend to emphasize Mormon scriptures like the Book of Mormon rather than the Bible in their devotional life,” Morehead said in an e-mail.

Even some LDS scholars were surprised to find Mormons at the top.

[Godzilla hisses]

Mormonism blah blah blah

[Stourme exclaims]

Holy ad hominem straw man batman!

We're discussing Presbyteriansim.

Can't Presbyterians defend their faith? Or is their defense just sitting around calling other people evil?

[Godzilla hisses again]

9. Presbyterianism knows nothing about baptism for the dead.

As well they shouldn't - as it was not a practice of the early church.

[Stourme corrects]

Not a practice of the early church... you can't be serious...

While teaching about the resurrection of the dead, Paul uses the doctrine of baptism for the dead to stress his point.

1 Cor 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

[Godzilla strains]

That is because we are judged by our acceptance of Jesus by grace through faith and not of our own works.

[Stourme continues]

This is the part where evangelicals mingle their own philosophies with a little scripture and hope no one calls them on it.

Rev 20 :12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the book were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev 20: 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

And don't even try the "I got a get out of judgment free card" either.

Eccl. 17 I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

John clearly states that every man will be judged by their works. You can't get around that.

[Stourme condescends]

This is the part where evangelicals mingle their own philosophies with a little scripture and hope no one calls them on it.

[Stourme provides a perfect example of that which he criticizes without the slightest recognition of the hypocrisy involved]

While teaching about the resurrection of the dead, Paul uses the doctrine of baptism for the dead to stress his point.

1 Cor 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Look at the pronouns. Prior and subsequent to this verse, Paul uses the inclusive pronoun "us" and in this verse he uses the exclusive pronoun "they". He's making the point that even the pagans among the Corinthians believe in the resurrection of the dead while separating himself from the practice of the baptism of the dead.

Hey can I get you to use colors besides blue and green? It is difficult for me to see the difference so the conversations you are having are not making sense. Thanks.

Holy ad hominem straw man batman!

maladjusted childhood storme? Or can't mormons answer back.

Silence on the first 8 points, tacit evidence of no defense on the part of mormons.

Not a practice of the early church... you can't be serious...

1 Cor 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

shooting spitballs stormy and missing. Paul uses an exclusive term "THEY" here, not an inclusive term like 'us', 'we' etc as he does throughtout the whole chapter. No stormy, Paul was not talking about a Christian practice, but a pagan practice (they). Further, in no place in the bom is found necrodunking as well. Infact, it teaches against such a practice (2 Nephi 9:15 and Alma 34:35-36).

This is the part where evangelicals mingle their own philosophies with a little scripture and hope no one calls them on it.

Mormons hope their 'works' are adequate to earn their salvation. The bible also states:

Isa 64:6 KJV - But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Just how bad is it for those who say works will get us into heaven. time for a little hebrew lesson stormy - the phrase above "filthy rags" is more literally translated "menstrual cloths", under mosaic law the ultimate uncleanliness one could have. What does the Bible say -

Act 15:11 KJV - But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
Eph 2:5 KJV - Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Eph 2:8 KJV - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God:
Rom 3:20 KJV - Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law [is] the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:27 KJV - Where [is] boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Rom 3:28 KJV - Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Rom 11:6 KJV - And if by grace, then [is it] no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if [it be] of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

John clearly states that every man will be judged by their works. You can't get around that.

I fail to see the word "all" in those passages from Revelation. But that is ok stormy, your view of the scriptures are polarized by the peep stone of smith. Were you to read the passage you would have first encountered this passage:

Rev 20:6 KJV - Blessed and holy [is] he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

What do verses 12 & 13 discuss - the second resurrection. Hmmmmmm, where do they come from - death and hell - commonly associated with those who are NOT saved but relied on their works. Well those works are tried and found lacking.

Well stormy, how goes your efforts to earn your salvation? Are you completely (100%) living up to your covenants, following to the letter all the laws, works and ordinances necessary to earn your salvation? If not, why not? Why are you procrastinating?

Hum...

get around it...

Ephesians 2:8-9 (King James Version)
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ok, next...

John ALSO clearly wrote:

Jhn 1:12 KJV - But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name:
Jhn 1:17 KJV - For the law was given by Moses, [but] grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
Jhn 3:15 KJV - That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Jhn 3:16 KJV - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Jhn 3:17 KJV - For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Jhn 3:18 KJV - He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Jhn 3:19 KJV - And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Yep.
I have a book from 1895 (I really like old medical books) anyway, it is mostly about women/babies. One of the suggestions is to rub opium liquid on the babies gums when they are teething. According to the doctor is eases pain and helps them sleep - yea duh!

Agreed; there are several studies that link the visions that Joseph Smith and his cadre with the magic mushrooms of upstate New York, rather than ethanol.

“The account of the birth of Christ in the Book of Mormon was given by people who had never been to Jerusalem and had never heard of Bethlaham. But they knew of Jerusalem from the records that were passed down to them. Understand the audiance of who they are speaking. It’s in the land of Jerusalem..Over there where we originally came from.”

I thought mormonites believed that the book of mormon was inspired by God- directly translated by God as Joe looked into his hat and the words appeared to him miraculously.

Had God forgotten that day what He prophesied in Micah - the specific small town and specific area of the clan of David?

Sorry, but your explanation points out God had nothing to do with the book of mormon. The mormon god (created spirit being who used to be a man), just didn’t know what God (the Real God, eternally God, neither created nor made) had said.

That is the downside of a created god...

And the one that Joey gives you
Is the best by far of all.

“I then said to my mother, I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.””

And yet, young Joe’s mom went ahead and joined the Presbyterian Church!

Mom’s always know when their kids are lyin’!

In Joe’s case, his Mom knew his character and did the opposite.

And yet Bethlehem is mentioned by Moses waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in Genesis while Jerusalem is not mentioned until AFTER Moses had been dead for years...

Genesis 35:19

New International Version (©1984)
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

New Living Translation (©2007)
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

English Standard Version (©2001)
So Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem),

New American Standard Bible (©1995)
So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

GOD’S WORD® Translation (©1995)
Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

King James Bible
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which [is] Bethlehem.

American King James Version
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

American Standard Version
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem).

Bible in Basic English
So Rachel came to her end and was put to rest on the road to Ephrath (which is Beth-lehem).

Douay-Rheims Bible
So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, that is Bethlehem.

Darby Bible Translation
And Rachel died, and was buried on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

English Revised Version
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem).

Webster’s Bible Translation
And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem.

World English Bible
Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath (the same is Bethlehem).

Young’s Literal Translation
and Rachel dieth, and is buried in the way to Ephratha, which is Bethlehem,

Ruth 4:11 Then the elders and all those at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.

1 Samuel 17:12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul’s time he was old and well advanced in years.

Micah 5:2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “’But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.’” Matthew 2:4-6

John 7:42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David’s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?”

And Jerusalem...

First found yeaars later in joshua 10:1...

Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and were living near them.

Now, if the mythical characters in Joey Smiths head had records that mentioned Jerusalem, why were all those records in the Old Testament that mentioned Bethlehem missing ???

The book of mormon was “as far as it is translated correctly” and had those precious parts missing ???

Oh noez...
