Pope Benedict XVI yesterday stopped to give a police dog an unexpected pat while thanking some of the 2,000 members of the West Midlands Police who had helped to protect him during his visit.
After meeting the seminarians of England, Wales and Scotland at Oscott College, Sutton Coldfield, the Pope saw Jake, a black Springador who acts as an explosives sniffer for the police.
Wading through a crowd of public servants the Pope was greeted by the dog, who appeared to enjoy the attention....

Thanks for posting the wonderful pictures Pyro. I had not seen pictures of Pope Benedict in some time and he is looking older.
Something I never thought of before is ‘could the Pope have a pet?’ or have any of the Popes had pets and why not? I can’t ever recall hearing of a dog or cat at the Vatican.
Oh yes! I had completely forgotten about the book!
I was driving down a divided highway, light traffic, and there was a black lab that jumped onto the highway and started running around in circles and running back and forth. He looked like he was having a party all by himself. Several cars beeped at him to get out of the street, which he did.
-- and a goldfish named Gretchen, but no photo of the fish seems to be available.
Thanks for the information AAM! Guess they have to have very small non intrusive kinds of pets but I could see them easily having cats.
Thank you for the beautiful pix.
As an animal lover, I love that he gave the dog a pat. My husbnd will enjoy hearing that, too.
LOL .. purty original .. ;)
My pleasure .. ;)
Hey has there ever been a Doggie in the Vatican?
Oh you just answered my question.
I wonder what kind.
It would be too cool if he had a Dachshaund.
Holy Hot Dog! LOL
We have been Lab family for 25yrs.
We introduced a Dachshaund to the mix a couple of years ago.
The doxie has the 2 labs out smarted for sure.
“Dog is giving him full attention.”

Dogs are smarter than we give tham credit for. He probably instinctively knows, this is not just another guy.
One wonders if it's a small dog (the kind that could easily be concealed) or a large and obvious one like a St. Bernard (or a lively Lab).
Thank you!
OK, I see Shellie & Ruby. Who’s the yellow girl?
Pretty babies.
:) That would make a wonderful Christmas card.
I call her my "semi-rescue". She's quite well bred, she wasn't in any danger and certainly wasn't being mistreated, but the rest of her littermates had sold except for one other girl, and at 9 months old she was just vegetating in the dog yard getting dog food and an occasional tennis ball, but no training (not even sit!) The owner of the sire called me and wanted me to take a look at them. I originally wanted to look at the other yellow girl, who is smaller, but she was a real ditz (when you threw a bumper for her she ran off with it).
This little girl figured out "heel" and "sit" almost instantly, and she retrieves like a machine. She brought the bumper back and laid it respectfully on my feet. 10 days after I took her home I put her in a hunt test just for grins and she nailed the test both days.
Her second hunt test is this Saturday, if she passes she gets her Started title in HRC.
Here she is with her daddy, Woody, who's working on his HRCH title.
Woody is without a doubt the best-natured Lab on the planet. He rides in the back of the pickup truck, and he has a Fan Club wherever he goes. He has certainly given Katy his temperament.
Peace on earth, more Labs to men!
Ah. So you gave her a J-O-B! Very good.
My first lab, likely mixed mixed from something smaller, was the best natured lil thing. Very empathetic. I never understood tho why she developed resentment toward other dogs getting into her face (except for her ‘sissy’). She would have been a great one for nursing home & child ward visits. I just never took the time.
The current lab is a total switch. A gallumping oaf of a dog, only bright at sneaking people food or kitty crunchies from the litter box. I wish I had pics of what she did to the cornbread cakes (plural) left on a friend’s counter to cool. No sense of shame. As another FReeper termed it recently, she’s a Laborador Deceiver!
