The original sculpture, (above) the "Il Cristo degli Abissi", is in the Mediterranean sea off San Fruttuoso between Camogli and Portofino on the Italian Riviera. It was placed in the water on 22 August 1954 at approximately 17 meters depth, and stands 2.5 meters (8.5 feet) tall. Professor Guido Galletti cast the original from the inspiration of the first Italian to use SCUBA gear, swimmer/diver Duilo Merchant. Galletti wanted a symbol to inspire all who explored and loved the sea in 1954. In 1961.

In this video you will see an approximate nine foot bronze sculpture that symbolizes peace of mankind from its unusual setting - beneath the ocean at Key Largo Dry Rocks off John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. The statue and the replicas like it around the world are known as the "Il Christo Degli Abissi" or in English - "Christ of the Abyss".

.

Thank you. That’s beautiful.

Can you believe that years ago in the city where I live, Corpus Christi, Tx, (means ‘body of Christ) a group of citizens wanted to construct a statue of Christ (similiar to the one in Rio) on the high bluff in the city overlooking the bay- but were voted down by Lib/PC fanatics?
Amazing. Stupid Libs.

That is sad. Maybe you should see if they could pout one of these statues under the water in the bay.

My son Kyle is buried in Corpus Christi.

He died after living only 7 days. He was 1 1/2 month premature.

Both statues are stunning, OV. Thanks so much for the ping and for proving once again that I’m never too old to learn something new every day.

Still praying for you.

'Maybe they could put a statue in the bay'

__________________________________________

I don't think Corpus Christi bay is clear enough for scuba diving much.

The First Presbyterian church on the bay uptown got one up on the PC crazed Libs, though. They commissioned this statue of Christ by Kent Ulmberg, and it rests on their front lawn overlooking the bay. Nobody can complain. It's on private property.

I won an award on a photographer's site for this photo that I took of the statue:

The picture is a ‘composition’.
The sunset and water is from another photo.
I tried to find a photo of the statue in daylight on the
church ground overlooking the bay, but I couldn’t.
Anyway you can see how beautiful the statue is.
If I find one, I’ll post it.
