The first list should be:
The 2 plans of salvation.

1) Never ever break the law and 2) Be forgiven. And the first one don’t count.

“Does your Faith stand on such a foundation? “

Question: Doesn’t the Sermon on the Mount supersede the 10 Commandments?

I can see how people might think that the Sermon on the Mount/Plain takes the place of the Old Covenant since it is Christ’s teaching.

However, Christ taught repeatedly about following the Commandments. He just harranged the Pharisees and Sadducees on following the letter of the law with all its 600 plus stipulations, cleanliness, not eating with Gentiles/pagans, not touching an injured body — Good Samritan Story, etc.

I’m sure you get the idea.

“I’m sure you get the idea.”

I do. I just find it odd that the 10 Commandments are considered “pillars” since a higher law is now in effect.

For example:

21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

or...

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

or...

“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ 34 But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

Wouldn’t it seem that if you were still orienting your life by the 10 commandments and failed to take into account Jesus’ “upgraded” versions, that you would fail the test on judgement day?

But Christ is referencing the Ten Commandments in all your quites, correct?

And when the Scribe asks Christ about what he needs to do to inherit the Kingdom of God, Christ tells him (after the scribe enumerated the Commandments,) “You have answered correctly. Come and follow me.” At which time the scribe’s face fell, for he had many possessions.

My faith stands upon God's Word. The theme throughout the Bible is that mankind is a sinner - from birth until death, we all (for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God) are sinners and can do nothing about that sin - we can be sorry, we can do good things/works, and we can say anything we want, but in the end - only one thing can deal with our problem of sin that separates us from God and Eternal Life -

Saving faith in Jesus Christ alone for the work HE has accomplished. Being truly repentant (not just sorry, but actively turning from sin). This is what the most prolific apostle recorded time and again.

Anything beyond that should be the natural outpouring of our faith and salvation, because of our growth in Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the believer. This includes all of the works and the fruits of the Spirit. James wrote of demonstrating our faith by our works - again, as a clear picture of a person who has received salvation through faith in Jesus Christ - should demonstrate their faith by their actions and works (not, again, a reliance ON works -but as a sign OF that faith).

I won't take away from people who feel the need to have itemized doctrine as a security blanket, just so long as they don't mistake a head-knowledge of such lists as what saves them.

My faith also trust completely Paul's first letter to Timothy - when he reminds the young pastor that "For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time."

**My faith also trust completely Paul’s first letter to Timothy**

Pretty narrow reference there. No Gospels?

Holy Scripture is only one part of a person’s faith. Do you obey the Ten Commandments?

Do you say The Lord’s Prayer?

Do you say either the Apostles Creed or the Nicene Creed at your church?

What church do you belong to that you base your faith on First Timothy only?
