Anne Rice Breaks Up With Christianity via Facebook...
Beliefnet ^ | July 28th, 2010

Posted on 07/29/2010 1:53:32 PM PDT by TaraP

Well, some stars like Amanda Bynes use technology like Twitter to tell the world they are retiring. Some stars like Kelsey Grammar announce the end of his marriage. But today Anne Rice became the first pop culture figure I know that decided to break up with Christians, and she did it using facebook.

On her official website she posted the following announcement via her facebook feed this afternoon:"I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life.

In the name of ...Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian Amen.

“Okay, I’ll bite. Who (or what) is Anne Rice? And why should I give a rat’s rear end what she does or doesn’t believe??”

Ditto

Rice’s son is gay. She and her son were raised Roman Catholic, the church she turned to after she gave up the vampires a few years ago.

Apparently, her return to Rome didn’t stick.

She was going to write a seven-part series on the life of Christ. I think she’s written two. Wonder if she plans on finishing the series.

Let’s hope not.

Before getting too hot under the collar, check out the last couple of books she wrote, very sensitive takes on the early life of Christ as she imagined it.

But particularly check out the "afterword" in this book "Christ the Lord" next time you're in a bookstore. She goes into great detail about how the PhDs in religion she consulted at all the fanciest universities showed poor faith themselves and outright apostasy and contempt for orthodoxy.

http://www.annerice.com/ChristTheLord-OutOfEgypt-NotesAnne.html

"Christ the Lord" was actually a very good book. Deeply flawed, but worth reading.

I exchanged some email correspondence with her after reading "Christ the Lord." She was a truly sweet kind soul.

Pray for this poor confused woman. Its been a struggle for her. Her soul is in jeopardy. Just pray for her.

Stanley Ann is correct.

Boy Named Sue? Boy with girl’s name. Pa made Sue a tough guy. Pa made Stanley a slut.

If she thinks that's "being a Christian," she was never a Christian to begin with -- she just bought what the mainstream media SAYS ABOUT Christianity.

You're right, those are not what "being Christian" is all about. And if you stop to think about it a moment, that's probably exactly the point Anne Rice is trying to make.

Look at it from the perspective of somebody who is not already a Christian. What sort of impression would you get about what Christianity is all about?

Pretty much you'd be left to get your impression from the more vocal self-described Christians who take to the airwaves.

And what do they seem to spend most of their time time talking about? Homosexuality, birth control, "Evangelical politics (i.e., social conservative Republican), creationism, and so on.

If that's not what Christianity is really about ... maybe Anne Rice is correct about "breaking up" with that brand of "Christianity." Seriously: if that's not Christianity, why do we put up with those folks?

For a much better exposition of Ms. Rice's proposition, I would recommend a couple of books by Donald Miller: A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, and Searching for God Knows What.

If she is leaving Christianity and or thinks it is wrong, why would she say, “In the name of Christ”? Seems to me she is admitting she knows who and what Jesus is but is openly saying God is wrong. She is not saying she is an unbeliever, she is saying I am against God. Shocking prideful words to say the least.

Have you considered the possibility that she's really breaking up with "Christianity" as it's defined by those who spend all of their time focusing on the issues she mentioned?

As Jenny said above, those issues aren't what Christianity is all about. But if you see a "Christian leader" on the news, it's almost certain that he'll be talking about one or more of those things. To those on the outside, that's what "Christianity" looks like.

If that's not Christianity ... what does real Christianity look like?

I did not consider it.

Homosexuality is a sin.
God says so.

I'm not saying God hates so-called gay people.

I'm saying He told us it is wrong.

Rice stated, “I refuse to be anti-gay”

To me this means she is rejecting God and His Truth.

I don't usually attend Church services. I have a problem with the hypocrisy in most of them.
But I have not left my faith. I have not publicly stated I am leaving Christianity.
I have just left organized Churches. I admit not going to Church is wrong. I'm praying I can overcome my issues and find the right Church.

Rice doesn't admit her failure. She just finds failure in Gods Truth.

You asked me what does Christianity look like.
My short answer:

“I am the Way and the Truth and the Life”

His Truth is THE Truth.

Rice believes it is wrong.

Also......

addressing your statement on Christianity focusing on specific issues and how these “aren’t what Christianity is all about”....true.

For instance the homosexuality issue which I mentioned in my above post.
God told me it is wrong.
It is not repeated over and over in the Bible, but it is mentioned.

It obviously was important or it wouldn’t have been mentioned.

Ignoring some of the Words of God and highlighting only what sounds PC is wrong.

“God is Love”
AND God is “the Way and the Truth and the Life”

People can choose to ignore what they want to. But my belief in Him tells me otherwise.

Book sales must be down.

Somehow I doubt Anne Rice is hurting for money. She's sold 100 million books.

The homepage to her official website includes her latest Facebook postings. Here's one from three hours ago:

"My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn't understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me. But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than C...hristianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been, or might become."

She's confused--all over the place, apparently.

If you ever read the gay erotic she wrote under a pseudonym, she is one messed up woman.

(Can’t remember the name she wrote under, but there was a trilogy of books based on sleeping beauty - very, very naughty)

I think she’s got a lot of issues that are unresolved!!

Pseudonym was A. N. Roquelaure and the books were The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty (1983), Beauty’s Punishment (1984), and Beauty’s Release (1985)

At least that’s wikipedia tells me.

Anne RiceHer vampire books stretch from 1973-2006, so the "naughty" books are within that same time period. Maybe Euteneuer knows what he's talking about when he says to stay clear of Vampire Logic.

I'm not Catholic, but from the little I know I believe homosexuals have access to the sacraments of the Eucharist, once confession is made and penance is done.

It's divorcees who are denied the altar. Am I mistaken, Catholic Freepers?

She's confused--all over the place, apparently.

Either that, or you've missed her point.

It's pretty straightforward: what if a group of people calling themselves Christians begins to hold and promulgate views that are no longer consistent with what Christ taught and did... what would you do?

There are two basic questions:

1) How should true Christians behave?

2) Do those who claim to represent "Christianity," actually behave that way?

Well ... do they?
