the Mountain Meadows massacre still doesn’t speak very well for the church as a whole. I mean, The Prophet said murder and they murdered, was clearly not the right way to get close to God. We were supposed to be over that sort of thing in America by then.
_____________________________________________

Yes well, Brigham Young had his own theocratic dictatorship going in Utah Territory, complete with private army etc...

He ordered the murder of those 140 UNARMED men, women children and babers in arms and stole their 1,000 head of cattle 300 blood line horses, dozens of wagons, 10s of 1000s of dollars, property and the clothes off the backs of his victims and left their naked bodies to rot unburied for 2 years until the US Army came and buried them...then Briggy young went and destroyed the monum, ent that the US Army had placed over the bodies...

Young also kidnapped 17 babies and children under 7 and refused to return tham for 2 years until the US government paid him $10,000 ransom..(how much is that in todays money???)

Young never returned any of the cattle or property he stole...

Brigham Young was an evil greedy despot and crowned himself “king” as Joey Smith had before him and ruled his religous kingdom with an iron hand...

He lived in a mansion with his many concubines...”the Lion House” but considered himself “virtuous”...

Woe betide anyone man woman boy or girl who drew Youngs ire...

It was dangerous to believe outside mormonism..

murdered people were buried in secret in back yards all over Salt Lake in those days even children...

If Young wanted something he wasnt passed killing whole families of his own followers to get it..

Life was cheap in Salt Lake City under Youngs rule...

He also made himself governor of the whole territory anbd controlled the lives and property of everyone in his “land” collecting 10% taxfrom everyone that he called a tithe...

But very little went into the storehouse ...

A lot of the “tithe” was spent on his 50+ selfish mistresses, and his 80+ children...

Brigham Young died an extremely rich man 30 years after he arrived in Salt Lake...

A multi billionaire by todays money...

BY was a teleevangalist before his time...

and TV had still 100 years to go before it was invented...

Oh Resty, that is so blasphemous. What was missing from your life that made you so eager to grasp onto lies?

I apologize...

I think you misunderstood..

I was not “preaching” at you...

I was posting info...

I was building on something you had said...

We do that in these threads...

I understood that you are a Catholic and was answering a comment from a mormon who had claimed the mormon corporation was “superior” to the Catholic Church...

to which you had replied... “only true Christian church ever.....Catholicism”

Although I am a Protestant, and mormonism is not a denomination of Chrsitianity, but a false religion that has nothing to do with the LORD Jesus Christ of the Christian Bible, I do not agree that mormonism is a “superior” religion to Catholicism as a real denomination of the Christian Church...

While there are difference of opinion between Catholicism and the Protestant Reformation Churches, we all agree on the Trinity, the Virgin birth, the death of Jesus on the Cross, and that the Christian Bible is the only Word of God etc

While the mormons deny all of those basic tenets of Christianity...

Mormonism is not superior to anything Christian...

Mormonism is not Christianity

I am confused.
You've typed THIS here; (God must laugh at all the fools.) but have THIS on your home pasge:

"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear."
Thomas Jefferson

---------------------------------------------------
So; do you BELIEVE in a god; or not?

If you're confused, you must have the sort of belief that Jefferson referenced as "that of blind-folded fear", as opposed to beliefs that have been put to the tests, challenged by reason, and by life circumstances that have attacked, crushed, disintegrated, melted, and then re-molded those beliefs into something that approaches, and perhaps surpasses, the "homage of reason".

I grew up in an evangelical-type environment, and saw a multitude of examples of those beliefs of the "blind-folded fear" type. I also had the benefit listening to and learning from older relatives who had seen the worst of WW-II in Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. Almost all those WW-II veterans avoided church like the plague, yet each of them had a level of faith, peace, and quiet sense of purpose that did not exist among the scripture-quoting biddies.

Years later, I too passed through many, many years of life circumstances and the spiritual grist mill. My belief in God is strong, yet personal; it can't be pounded into someone else's head or heart.

Many years ago I heard a story that now makes much more sense. The short version: A missionary evangelist in a foreign country stumbled upon this English-speaking fellow and launched his presentation. The evangelist was all in his target's face with the preaching, ranting, and quoting of various scriptures; following alongside this Central American street, preaching right into the target's face. After a few miles of this, the target (who was actually quite at peace with God), stopped and stared at the evangelist with absolute clarity, with the perfect understanding and recognition that this poor fellow was driven to evangelize, driven to preach and rant and rave, until he himself could come to believe at least some of what he was preaching.

When you finally, really believe, then you can stop preaching.

And yes, God must laugh at all the fools. I doubt he is very amused with the corrupt.

Mark Twain reported it in his book about his travels out West in 1861 while still a young man with his brother, Orion, "Roughing It" - published in 1872.

APPENDIX. A. BRIEF SKETCH OF MORMON HISTORY.

and APPENDIX. B. THE MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE.

A quick Google search will find the book free online.

Mark Twain was still a journalist by trade at the time.
