HOUSTON Delegates of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod elected on Tuesday as its president the denomination's director of disaster response, a candidate backed by its more conservative members.
The Rev. Matthew Harrison of Ballwin received 54 percent of the vote for the three-year term. He defeated the incumbent, the Rev. Gerald Kieschnick, who received 45 percent and who had served three terms.

Hey, better to look like TR than Jimmy Carter.
Bully! Just bully!
Bully! Just bully!
The president I look most like is James Garfield.
Because he has been dead for 129 years?
Harrison is a true shepherd--willing to go anywhere to feed His sheep, yet the "food" he offers is the WORD--presented with power and without apologies! His election is a true answer to the prayers of many powerful prayer warriors!
Bad keyboard! Bad, bad!
Praise be to God that he was elected. The LCMS has moved in the wrong direction these past 9 years. Harrison will be able to right its course. A whole slate of conservatives were elected to the different boards too. A real sea change. Thankfully
!!BULLY!!
And here I thought you were writing in Cymraeg...
This truly is good news. Charles, you represented us well...
Not excited, just yet.
The tide came in in 2001. Many, many, many policies and acts of the Jay-Effers were instituted and, for a large part, The SanLuigi crew became the “benevolent big brother” to the congregations.
It will take tact, poise and reason to reset the “constitutional republic” that is the LCMS on the correct path (ortho-synodos [my word]).
The confessional laity needs to help in the catechesis end. Specifically, we need to be able to point out that what is (will be) happening is not politically motivated but a return to the doctrines of the church.
Yes, but it’s a start. There’s another thread where folks are bemoaning the fact we didn’t formally break all association with the ELCA. Good grief. Everyone wants it all, right now.
We have a lot of work to do. And, as you point out, it must be done smartly. But this gives us a beginning, and we must do God’s work. I’ll take our wins when they come.
Praise God!!!!
Okay so Charles didn't become the LCMS president but...he made it possible for there to be a new LCMS president.
Just a thought here but is Matthew Harrison related to President Benjamin Harrison? If so, it would be ironic since he looks like President Theodore Roosevelt.
Of course. I'm confident of his vote.
Pretty big beard you have. Do you sleep “in” or “out” at night?
It used to be a lot longer. When I first grew my beard many years ago, I let it go almost a year without trimming. It reached about halfway down to my bellybutton. I could actually feel it on my stomach when I went to sleep. However, I trimmed it to about James Garfield level when I started being confused with ZZ Top. The strange thing is that I suffer recurrent nightmares (about 3 or 4 times per year) about losing my beard. This happened again just a few weeks ago. As always, the moment I woke up I grabbed it for reassurance.
