Male bishops could become Anglican nuns, under Synod proposals
I thought this was a spoof at first, but it seems not: a General Synod working party is exploring whether the Church of Englands male bishops can join religious orders previously reserved for women. In other words, become Anglican nuns.
As usual, the Synods topsy-turvy ecclesiology is a mystery to me, but I gather that the idea is that bishops would be entitled to take vows in orders of nuns so that they can provide special episcopal oversight to the sisters. Its a typically ingenious Anglican response to the forthcoming ordination of women bishops. There will be jokes about bishops in wimples, but having bishop-nuns would introduce a degree of mutual cooperation that could make the introduction of women bishops much smoother, says my Synod source.
And just when I thought things couldnt get any weirder, I learn the identity of the bishop who is rumoured to have volunteered to take nuns vows: the Rt Rev Nick Baines, Bishop of Croydon, often spoken of as a successor to Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury. Says my informant: Nick is a big fan of Sister Act, and we knew he was keen to get ahead, as it were, so he was the obvious person to ask. And apparently he was delighted, because hes all about challenging gender stereotypes.

Ping!
Will wonders never cease.
“topsy-turvy” ....as in good is evil, up is down, dark is light.....ad nauseam.
If women can take on roles properly reserved for men and become "priests" and "bishops", then why shouldn't men take on the female apostolate and become nuns?
It sort of completes the whole crazy circle.

Don't forget the "tangent" effects around the edges of the circle...
But only barely touching the circumference...

Katherine Jefferts-Schori...
Mary Glasspool....
Numerous others...
What if male nun has a sex change, and marries another woman (in a loving, committed relationship, of course), can he/she then become a Bishop?
QE2? What’s happening to the legacy of QE1? The last 50 years have seen the abandonment of the British Empire, the mothballing of the British Navy and now the collapse into lunacy of the Church of England.
I think he'd make a good looking nun. :)
Without this reciprocity the changes they propose presume traditionally female vocations are of lesser value than traditionally male vocations.
They can start a new order: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
OH MONK go on ping 9 LOL!
I thought they were already an order. Isn't their Mother House in San Francisco?
Yes, there is a group called “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence” (send the kids out of the room before you google) in San Francisco - but their not part of a church.
I was proposing it as the perfect name for a the CoE Bishop/Nuns LGBTG/whatever to make it official. Plus they could party together.
:)
*snicker* I know that. I should have put the /s after my post. I've seen their antics in the Frisco Gay Pride parades.
But you are right, it would be the perfect name for the order with the CoE Bishops; describes their mindset perfectly.
