A Handy reference for those who are interested in the role religion played in the founding of this country and its 50 states.

America's founders did not intend for there to be a total separation of God and state, as shown by the fact that all 50 states acknowledge God in their state constitutions.

The reason for the “establishment clause” in the 1A was because the states wanted to reserve that option for themselves.

After all, the original colonies were basically communities of various sects.

It looks as though Massachusetts leads the way with 14 references. Very interesting post! Thanks!

No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office, or public trust, in this State; nor shall any one be excluded from holding office on account of his religious sentiments, provided he acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being.

This one is funny. It begins by saying there will be no religious test, and ends by saying there will be a religious test.

How then can liberals not see the mercy of God in our once Christian nation?
As children of the dark prince, they are kept locked and barred from the truth only God can show them by Christ Jesus our Lord and Saviour.
Their vanity and ignorance has destroyed America.
Professing themselves to be wise, they have become fools and changed the glory of God into the image of corruptible man. And they have descended to the lowest forms of moral decay and are slaves to the lust of the flesh and lust of the eyes and suffer from the pride of life. They do abominable iniquities and can not control the lust conceived in their wicked hearts. And the cancer is spreading daily.

All the constitutions mention God... and so do all the politicians. That tells us what that's worth!

Thank you for the post.

Very interesting material. I once did a study of the original state constitutions for a class I taught and was amazed at how somebody could read the original state constitutions...mostly written by our founding fathers...and then claim that we have “seperation of church and state”.

However, the founders carefully avoided establishing a connection between religion and state.

Religion is manmade; God is not.
