Amid Church Abuse Scandal, an Office That Failed to Act (Ratzinger)
NYT ^ | July 1, 2010 | LAURIE GOODSTEIN and DAVID M. HALBFINGER

In its long struggle to grapple with sexual abuse, the Vatican often cites as a major turning point the decision in 2001 to give the office led by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger the authority to cut through a morass of bureaucracy and handle abuse cases directly.

The decision, in an apostolic letter from Pope John Paul II, earned Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, a reputation as the Vatican insider who most clearly recognized the threat the spreading sexual abuse scandals posed to the Roman Catholic Church.

But church documents and interviews with canon lawyers and bishops cast that 2001 decision and the future pope’s track record in a new and less flattering light.

“Steep decrease? IF (and that’s a big “if” since Crimen Sollicitationis is still in effect) there’s been any decrease in known cases, it is only because Ratzinger has succeeded in keeping a lid on them.”

But this article didn’t even mention the report, even if only to refute it. Sorry, that is not even handed. Or good reporting.

“Cardinal Ratzinger was publicly disciplining priests in Brazil and Peru for preaching that the church should work to empower the poor and oppressed, which the cardinal saw as a Marxist-inspired distortion of church doctrine.”

Is that an even handed statement?

"It is 4 am in the morning when it was posted."

And two full hours after the bars closed.

I look at the overall article, not just one sentence.

"Is that supposed to be joke or something?"

Just an observation. The grammar and construct of the sentence; "It is 4 am in the morning when it was posted." is a joke.

“I look at the overall article, not just one sentence.”

OK.

From the article:

“Cardinal Ratzinger was publicly disciplining priests in Brazil and Peru for preaching that the church should work to empower the poor and oppressed, which the cardinal saw as a Marxist-inspired distortion of church doctrine.”

Is that an even handed statement?

You could be right.

Though we get that sort of thin more or less anyway. LOL.

At least I do. I think you’re not considered insane. LOL.

You re reason is deceived by your false belief that the Church is a monolithic structure ruled by strict hierarchy with the pope having autocratic rule.

Great. Then tell every RC church to stop paying money to their diocese so the money won't be transferred to Rome.

Keep the weekly offerings in the individual neighborhoods which need the money more than the Vatican. Rome has more than enough gold and ermine and silver and jewels and Prada shoes...

Are you able to discuss the article without making personal attacks?

Excellent point.

See HERE for how to discuss an article without making personal attacks.

The examples you used would have been pulled as "personal attacks" which are not allowed anywhere on Free Republic.

Back to "making it personal" by reading minds...

If I say "you believe" it is reading your mind. But if I say, "evidently, you believe" it is expressing my own mind, not reading yours.

Likewise, if I say "you're ignorant" it is reading your mind. But if I say "evidently, you're ignorant" it is expressing my own mind, not reading yours.

Thanks for the clarification. My only thought was that it might be making more work for you which is the last thing any of us want. 8~)

I appreciate it especially today. A bug bite one eye lid and I don’t do well as a pirate.

... and that should be obvious by my sloppy typing of bit as bite and eyelid as eye lid. LOL!

Wow. What a coincidence. A spider bit under my son's eye yesterday and today we took him to the doctor. His lower eye swelled to the size of a golf ball and was terribly painful. The advice we got for $130 was to apply cold compresses, something like Cortaid and lots of ice cream.

Feel better.

Interesting coincidence and thanks for the tip. Ice cream sounds particularly good.

THX THX.

If it’s a useful, functional distinction for you, that’s plenty good enough for me.

Anything to make it relatively easier to herd this stinking pile of cats!
