Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

If I am correct, the Mass readings for this coming Sunday (August 29) are all about...humility.

Here's a thought: Suffering is everywhere. It's not only in the requests for prayer. It's in the humor defiantly hurled into the teeth of the chaos and dissolution we discern all around us. It's in the resolutely rational argument constructed to fend off assaults on even the possibility of the justice and beauty, of the love and peace for which we all long.

And this suffering makes its home in ourselves. We ache like a sore thumb or a toothache. Part of the bliss of sleep is that just for a while we can put down the work of maintaining an attitude which will enable us to function with a plausible pretense of effectiveness while shielding our aching hearts.

SOME vanity, I suggest, is an effort to construct an illusion about ourselves that will distract us. And some hostility, therefore, is little more than an attempt to protect that illusion “from all enemies, domestic and foreign.”

BUT, one place we KNOW our Lord has been, one place He has occupied and redeemed, is the place of suffering. So it seems to me that if we can be opened (by His grace) to one another’s sorrows, to the pain of even the most hostile we may find that those hooks which fasten vanity to our hearts may be loosened, may fall free.

In the wonderful Pilgrim's Progress, when Christian gazes upon the crucified Lord, his burden falls from his back and tumbles away, never to be seen again.

Today I mean to look for the crucified Lord in the lives not only of my friends but of the inimical. Maybe the burden of vanity will fall from me.

May it be so, Lord, both the seeking and the finding.

MD, please joyously welcome this FReeper to your thread.
This thread is for all flavors of Christian jodyel.

I apologize for the anger I showed when you came onto that prayer thread about the lady with Stage 4 cancer and tried to chastise the OP for her way of praying.
I apologize for bristling when you said I got angry because I am a Catholic and came here to find my “humble and contrite heart”

I’m sure you will benefit from the Truth of Jesus Christ here, I know I do. Blessed are the Meek.

Thank you so much MD for these daily reminders. You do us a great service.

Utterly true! And the greatest spiritual consolations I have received have been when my concern for someone else has been so all-encompassing, the "me" was just blotted out.

Thank you, net. xzins is going to do the honors next week. This is gonna be good!

YES, maryz. That’s the best. Our selves are so painful and when we inflate, they just get more sore. But when we “minister” (related, as I am fond of saying, to the word “minus” — a minister is one who makes himself less) the big old ego deflates and is less of a distraction.

jodyel: Let me know if I may add you to the pingity-ping list.

Well, yes ... but on the other hand, aren't we praying for nobody to give a flying FReep about our suffering? Shared joy is increased, and shared sorrow is decreased, as the philosopher said, and you can visit the Undead Thread and see that every day. And yet, isn't wanting anyone except OldTax-lady to care "vanity"? But on the other hand, aren't we all walking around lying to each other, and suffering needlessly because we feel so alone all the time?

What's up with that?
