So it seems to me that if we can be opened (by His grace) to one another’s sorrows, to the pain of even the most hostile we may find that those hooks which fasten vanity to our hearts may be loosened, may fall free.

Well, yes ... but on the other hand, aren't we praying for nobody to give a flying FReep about our suffering? Shared joy is increased, and shared sorrow is decreased, as the philosopher said, and you can visit the Undead Thread and see that every day. And yet, isn't wanting anyone except OldTax-lady to care "vanity"? But on the other hand, aren't we all walking around lying to each other, and suffering needlessly because we feel so alone all the time?

What's up with that?

Not buzzackly, IMHO. We're praying that what others think of us not be so important to us.

It's like "blessings" or what Catholics call "consolations"; like what Mother Angelica said. We want God. We want God to think about us, and to give us the grace to care about each other.

But if what He gives is more important than who He is, I think we're not doing it right yet.

Further, to cease to fixate on consolations is not to turn consolations away any more than it is to crave them. When we are consoled, we are grateful. When we are in an arid spell, there is still plenty to be grateful for. When you think of me, I am consoled. When you don't, is that a reason for my love to be any less?

Sorry, not being clear. Distracted.
