Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

Lord, if you will not sweep me away in a flood of love, a flood so deep that it will overwhelm me and cast me up upon the shores of your kingdom, then make me gentle, supple, yielding, but strong so that I may ease and caress the feet of the saints who walk on me toward your throne. (p.s.: teach me to mean this.)

You're a poet and don't know it! That was beautiful. Amen, to the "teach me to mean it part", it's the hardest part. To mean it already knowing that he said "tribulation worketh patience" is even harder. It sounds nice to ask God for patience, but it sounds amazing when we know the asker KNOWS what he really is asking for.

It's been raining every day for the last four days. The weeping willows are in their glory and the hydrangeas are quite perky. Unfortunately, the weeds are thriving as well. Just more work for "Manuel" - my nickname for my nearly full-time landscaper/gardener hubby. ;o)

Building up slowly is the way to go.

Some evil docs don’t warn folks about the niacin flush.

Glad you aren’t suffering too badly with it.

The rain it raineth every day
Upon the just and unjust fella.
But chiefly on the just because
The unjust steals the just’s umbrella

From the desire of having my jokes appreciated, Lord grant me the grace to desire it.

Niacin can also reduce serum levels of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), while at the same time increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels, and is used as an agent of choice in the treatment of hyperlipidemia (Figge et al, 1988; AMA, 1986). In contrast, niacinamide has lacked this effect in most studies (Altschul et al, 1955; Parsons & Finn, 1957; Figge et al, 1988), although some evidence of lipid-lowering activity has been observed with long-term administration, possibly due to conversion of niacinamide to niacin.

The official word .

Full disclosure: I did NOT make that up.

It’s somebody else’s joke AND a Dawg family standby.

Dear Fellow Freepers in our prayer thread, our fearless leader Mad Dawg has asked me to pinch hit for him for a few days. I hope this new month will see us continuing in our quest for being the “people of God” and for allowing Him to work in our lives as He sees fit.

I remember when we first batted around the idea for this thread, a few commented about how it sounded like we were asking to be doormats or something. I hope as we have grown through this exercise we have seen how only when we do humble ourselves before God are we made truly strong – where it counts - and that through our weakness he is glorified. I truly hope we will continue to encourage each other with our daily trials and victories. A nation can change, but it is only through one heart at a time.

2 Chronicles 7:14 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

I confess I'm not a "morning bird". Maybe thirty + years of getting up before the crack of dawn has brought me to the point of "If I don't have to get up, I won't!". Well, I do eventually get up because my back can only endure layin' down for so long, but it is nice to wake up most times when I wake up and not have some electronic device tell me to!

Wow…just try doing a word study of “humble” sometime. It’s really humbling!

We want esteem from men, what do we do? Brag about ourselves. Extol our accomplishments. Compare ourselves to others. Our current POTUS come to anyone’s mind there?

But if we want the esteem from whom it really counts – the creator and sustainer of the universe – the Lord God Almighty, how do we go about that? Thankfully, he tells us:

Isaiah 66
1 This is what the LORD says:
"Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where will my resting place be?
2 Has not my hand made all these things,
and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.

Awesome! Just like David, we can be the "apple of his eye", too. God hates pride more than all our other faults and I think the exact opposite is humility. If you think about it, it is the most honest of all states of mind.

P.S. I don't always "pray" the way it's posted on the OP but I do include the concepts in my prayers and I pray for each of us to "be" where God wants us to be, the men and women he has designed us to be, ever closer to the image he has given us through Christ. Have a blessed day - what's left of it, anyway. :o)

Matthew 6
1Take heed that you do not your justice before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven.

2Therefore when thou dost an almsdeed, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

3But when thou dost alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth.

4That thy alms may be in secret, and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

5And when ye pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

6But thou when thou shalt pray, enter into thy chamber, and having shut the door, pray to thy Father in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret will repay thee.

Amen!!! Great verses to remember, but SOOOO hard to do while we are in a “carnal” state of mind. Goes against the program, so to speak. There is a great blessing in doing good anonymously. That is where we really show our faith, when we do something that we know only God knows about.

I must admit that at the beginning of this exercise – the Novena – I was a little skeptical. What could I possibly get out of praying a “canned” prayer? Well, I did it anyway, with only a sleight change in that I didn’t always add the ending “chorus” after every line. I did not leave out the “meat” and I truly meant it every time I said it. Like I said yesterday, I don’t pray it verbatim but I do try to remember the gist of it. What is it? Well to me, it’s asking the Lord to give me the gift of true humility. The kind that doesn’t seek to be noticed, or esteemed, or chosen over others. The kind that doesn’t need to be honored, or praised (that’s a hard one for me – especially when I cook), or consulted, or approved by anyone but God.

This prayer also helped me to understand that true humility means I should seek always to do what God wants me to do and not to be afraid that someone might try to humiliate me because of it. I don’t need to be afraid that others may despise me, because they despised Jesus and he did what he needed to do anyway and said what needed to be said. I can be rebuked, ridiculed, wronged, slandered and even suspected, but if my motives and heart are right with the Lord I don’t need to worry about it. I can leave my heavy burdens with him, put it all in his hands. If you put Jesus first, others second and you last, it equals JOY!

I think most of all, to pray for true humility is to accept that God will take us up on the offer. It won’t always be a fun ride, but it WILL be worth it!

1 Peter 5:5-6
…All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,
"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

“...not to be afraid that someone might try to humiliate me ...”

Lol! I saw THIS begin to get answered right away after praying. God knows what He is doing...and it IS good.

;-)

(Amen to the prayer.)
