Litany of Humility

Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.

From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.

That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

Closing Prayer

Dominicus Gabriel Mariae

O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.

In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love

That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,

Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.

I also like the explanation of what forgiveness means. It’s “giving up my right to get even with”. Just like our Heavenly Father releases us from the penalty of our sins - the ultimate penalty (death) - we release others from our need, want, to have revenge. Vengance belongs to God.

A great sermon on Good Friday at a Pepsicola church included that forgiveness is saying, “Let the pain stop with me.”

Tampering with the psalms.. LOL.

But the tampering was done with great humility.

Good morning! He sends his rain on the just and on the unjust, just when they got to the pool.

LOL!

And Good, if damp, morning to you! Our second cloudy day, but no real rain for the unjust or the unjust, not just yet.

Beloved in the Lord!

Today I have no pious dicta. Maybe it’s a day for listening.

May the racket and confusion in our hearts be stilled by grace, and in the stillness may we hear the still, small voice.

Mad Dawg,

The prayer is really beginning to take effect. I am discovering some really yucky stuff (related to the prayer) within me that needs the power of Christ to smash it to smithereens. I am confident He will do so...

;-)

Amen to the prayer for today!

The hummingbird feeder was crawling with ants. The finch feeder was laying on its side under the deck with the top off and evidence of a midnight squirrel picnic all around. The double-squirrel proof bird feeder is nearly empty this morning and I had to PERSONALLY scare off the squirrels three times yesterday! I don't want to feed squirrels or ants. I don't especially like them, although I do admire the squirrels' ingenuity and dexterity to be able to outsmart our inventions. I got quite irritated while cleaning everything up and then restocking!

But then I remembered how God cares about even the grass of the fields, and the sparrows, and, probably, the bugs and vermin, even. They all have to eat! Right? How much more does he say he cares for us!

Pardon my venting. I'm trying to put things into the right perspective.

Yes, Frank is doing better, thanks for asking. He’s still waking up to eat at night, but he goes back to sleep instead of whining for an hour.

Sorry about your bird feeders. We get ants in our hummingbird water, too.

As I, having hot-flashes because of the Vitamin B they are noww inflicting upon me, threw myself on my uneasy couch, which was at least 500 degrees Centigrade, last night, I was tormented with the thought that you might think that I was mocking YOU with my delight in the sola scriptura "logic loop".

(Just to show I have nothing up my sleeve, I think BOTH sides have to struggle without a slam-dunk anywhere in sight.)

Nothing could be further from the truth. It was the lovely way it made my brain explode that I was rejoicing in which, uh, that, um, by, with, or from, to.

(trying to avoid dangling prepositions also makes my brain explode.)

So, yesterday I was troubled when I saw how easily some of us (NEVER ME, of course, I am the SOUL of coolth) get heated up in the pursuit of an argument.

For us feelthy papists today is the day we commemorate Martha of the Mary Martha thing. (Does anybody else think that that is a very Johannine story to show up in a synoptic Gospel?)

The Ol’ Mizris pointed out that somebody said in her little devotional thingie that Martha's error was not in the “much serving” but in her losing sight of the object and objective of that service, which was love.

It's all very well to pursue the Truth as we think it (Him) to be. But if we do not, as it were, ‘tag back’ and touch Love before we run around the bases on a fly ball or lofty argument, all the running will be in vain

(I have now achieved a baseball analogy. Is America a great country or WHAT?)

Here at least, let us “highly resolve” to ‘tag back’ to the base of the Love which moves the Sun and other stars, the Love which makes life not only possible but good.

If we who love and are loved by Love itself do not show love conspicuously, what will become of those to whom God sends us?

Lord, remove these vain scales from my eyes, I beg you, so that I may see you in those whom I encounter, and seeing you in them, may one day come to see you in yourself.
