Rafael Cardinal Merry del Val
O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being extolled, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being preferred to others, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being humiliated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being despised, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of suffering rebukes, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being calumniated, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being forgotten, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being ridiculed, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being wronged, Deliver me, Jesus.
From the fear of being suspected, Deliver me, Jesus.
That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That, in the opinion of the world, others may increase and I may decrease,Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be chosen and I set aside, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be praised and I unnoticed, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be preferred to me in everything, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become
as holy as I should, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
Dominicus Gabriel Mariae
O most gracious Lord Jesus:
To redeem an undeserving humanity
You gave up everything you had.
In your mercy, grant us the grace
of despising all things but you
and your love
That we may know the joy
you brought to us
through your dolorous Passion
and Death,
Who live and reign in might and bliss
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
One God, in everlasting glory.
Prayers for your b/p.
Guess praying late is better than missing.
The good news is the deer didn’t eat the beans.
The bad news is the deer didn’t eat the beans
LOL!
Another night of bad sleep. I’m going to up my elavil. If that doesn’t solve it I’m going to ‘splain to the doc that I MAY die of BP but I’m fer shur going to die if I have to try to make it on 4 hours sleep per night.
I am learning to thank God for nuisances like this. Maybe a little.
My Dear Amos:
(Of course, if you want to be known as THAT prophet, you gotta expect some abuse.)
I am so sorry that you have been so assaulted.
Stand by for really Catholic reply:
God loves you. He must, because evidently He’s wailing the daylights out of you.
(As Theresa of Avila said to God when a carriage she was riding in turned on its side: No wonder you have so few friends!)
I think I can say that we here will hold you up to God and suggest that (a) He lighten up; (b)He give you the grace to see and feel His unfailing hand through the gloom of the assaults.
I tell myself that God has shown me the goodness of His love. Now he is training me to put all my faith in Him even when things stink. Deep down, I know He is good and kind. I must learn to hold onto that when it doesn’t FEEL like He’s especially good or kind.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
May this Sabbath be a day of refreshment for you, a day in which the memory of God’s saving love buoys you up above the waves which are trying to overwhelm you (and the rest of us.)
The “novena” deal is that there are 9 days from the Ascension to the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostibuls. Acts says they spent the time in prayer.
So some geniuses decided that it would be cool to pray for stuff for nine days running. “Novem” is Latin for nine. I don’t know the rest of the derivation.
But then some athletes pray for 54 days (9 x 6) and others for fewer, but the name ‘novena’ stuck to a commitment to pray for a number of days.
Now, “Nox” means “night” in Latin. So we could call it a Nox-ena to encourage those who forgot to pray in the daytime to pray the Litany before they go to bed?
Day TEN of our nine day prayer!
(I told a friend that my plan was to become both emperor AND Pope. And my Papal motto would be, “But wait! There’s MORE!”
I happen to think this is a great line to use in preaching the Gospel. It’s always more and better than we could imagine!
His answer was, “NOW how much would you pray?”)
And I propose that we have graduated from a “some-ena” to a Nox-ena.
But then, I’m a sick man.
Good morning. I’m so sorry that you’re poorly.
Good morning, and God bless you!
Thanks for the explanation of novena. I had never heard the term before...sounds reasonable to me. One of the many faults in my prayer life is that I expect not just gratification, but instant gratification. I want a genie, not God. Prayer should bring me to His will, not Him to mine.
Well, there's a version of a novena in which you say the same prayer nine times in a row on the same day ;-).
Prayer should bring me to His will, not Him to mine.
Yes, exactly.
Hmmm....after the experience with my two year old son at Trader Joes, not sure I want much more humiliation. Even if it does bring humility.
Then again, maybe God’s telling me something. Loudly.
Trust me,
“This, too, shall pass.” :-)
Two-year olds are a piece of cake compared to teen-year olds.
When you have both at once, you might as well give up and just be Stuned.
If He does, I think He can do wonderful things with it.
C.S. Lewis:
I find I must borrow yet another parable from George MacDonald. Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on: you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of- throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.
PerZACKly!
Placido Domingo! The sun is shining, the dog is sighing, the catz have disappeared, and all eight Offspring are blessedly asleep, for a few more minutes.
Thanks, I needed that.
Mu medicines are making me sick. Phooey.
Sunday! Day 10 of the Noxena!
Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Medicine is supposed to make you better! Wine and naps are my favorite meds ...
Long stretch of insomnia is not good.
If you aren’t already taking the b/p med in the morning, try it.
