MONROE, Ohio (WDTN) - A large statue of Jesus that has been seen by millions across the country was destroyed by a fire late Monday night. The King of Kings statue that stood outside the Solid Rock Church located on Union Road just off Interstate 75 is now in ruins. Only a few wire frames are still standing.
Officials are still investigating, but lightning is likely what sparked the blaze. The fire also damaged the attic of the church's amphitheater. Church officials say it will cost $700,00 to resurrect the giant Jesus. Word of the fire spread quickly. Many church members couldn't believe what had happened and came to see for themselves.
What they found left them shocked and saddened.
"This is not right," a church member named Gifty says. "We just all have to go on our faith and ask God. This cannot be a coincidence."
"I was pretty upset," Andy Caudill says. "Seeing a big thing of our Lord and Savior gone. It's pretty sad."
The statue was built in 2004. The 42-foot span between its outstretched arms grabbed the attention of motorists as they drove by it.
A sign along the highway reads "We will rebuild".
It was hideous. And, you’re right, nobody got hurt. Sorry the church is rebuilding it.
They have the technology...
They can make him better than he was before.
Better, stronger, faster...
Thats funny! Did you see him selling the bionic ear plug for hearing? I am not kidding!
I live about 10 miles from it. The statue was known as “The Big Butter Jesus”. Word is that in honor of Michelle Obama, the replacement will be known as “The I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Jesus.”
The earthquake a day for the last 58 days; the recurring meteors streaking through the sky; the cracks in the BP oil well pipes; the....... ~ the probabilistic polls that tell him his popularity is low as sin and getting lower.
If I were a member of that church's board I'd recommend NOT rebuilding the statuary! Next time it might take something bigger, and it'll disappear faster, but this time the church building itself was saved.
There not a cult? You know any of people?
No I don’t know any of the people or anything about the place. I hope that when and if they rebuild they have his hands folded in prayer instead of forming goalposts.
Love that picture. And of course Heywood Banks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq01UYiMyHg
You know I guess this was years ago. I just tried to find. There was a priest in africa. He was pressured? Or unwisely. Who thought he could have a memorial mass said for a dead vodoo practioner. Well while he was doing the mass the whole church sparked then burnt down. That will teach anybody.
He keeps it up! You can measure him for a lightning rod!
can you see that lighted sign from your house? i’ve driven by there at night, and that stinkin sign about made me blind!! that thing is more freakish than the statue.
"We just all have to go on our faith and ask God. This cannot be a coincidence."
"Maybe it was a judgment. Didja ever think of that?"
Divine displeasure over idolatry, or bad taste.
The destruction was an act of God IMHO
No argument there! His will be done!
Love this!
LOLOLOL
Little boats can be made of fiberglass;statues of Jesus ought to be made of marble.
