Are Ouija Boards Satanic?
Aggie Catholic ^ | 6/9/2010 | Marcel LeJeune

Q - Is using a Ouija Board ok, if just for fun? Also, what do you think of the comments at the bottom of this websiteI can't believe that Hasbro makes this and Toys 'R Us sells them!

A - Thanks for the questions. I think my answers might just surprise some of our readers.

The origin of these boards is not from a game. Rather, they come from a practice of "channeling" or "divination". Channeling is asking the dead to give us answers to questions or power and is an ancient - and dangerous - practice. Thus, the word "occult" = "hidden". The Bible speaks directly to this practice:

Let there not be found among you anyone who immolates his son or daughter in the fire, nor a fortune-teller, soothsayer, charmer, diviner, or caster of spells, nor one who consults ghosts and spirits or seeks oracles from the dead. Anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, and because of such abominations the LORD, your God, is driving these nations out of your way. - Deuteronomy 18: 10-12
He practiced soothsaying and divination, and reintroduced the consulting of ghosts and spirits. He did much evil in the LORD'S sight and provoked him to anger. - 2 Kings 21:6
And when they say to you, "Inquire of mediums and fortune-tellers (who chirp and mutter!); should not a people inquire of their gods, apply to the dead on behalf of the living?" - Is 8:19
So, the history of divination and channeling is ancient, but it has some more modern forms, which have become popular again from various sources, including - New Age practices, the Occult, fortune-telling, Wicca, astrology, and "games" such as the Ouija Board. All of these have Pagan spiritual origins and should never be practiced by Christians.

Ultimately, this is a dangerous practice because it is an attempt to seek spiritual power from somewhere other than God. If this is the case, then demons or evil spirits are most likely the ones supplying it. We open ourselves up to demonic influence if we do so - to the point of having possession being possible down the line.

Some might think this is an overreaction and that it is just fun. I have heard some say - at most, it is a spooky time for kids to pretend they can talk to the dead. But, demons can work through this kind of attitude to quietly induce someone to their way of thinking and acting.

A personal disbelief in the power of Satan, does not make his power go away. Just ask an exorcist who has had to fight with such demons. They will not beat around the bush in regards to such practices.

The danger is very real.

Thus, the Catechism states:

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future.48 Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

So, in answer to your question - I believe the Ouija Board and other kinds of New Age practices to be very dangerous. I also think it is scandalous that they are marketing it as a "game" and so many people accept such things uncritically.

They're sold as "toys", because they wouldn't sell as well if sold as a "tool of the devil"

And in that case they would be sold at Home Depot right next to metric socket sets which I also believe are tools of the Devil, or the French, I'm not exactly sure which.

Perhaps it may be nowadays, but it wasn't 50 years ago ... :-)

If by nowadays you mean 25 years ago when I was in school.

I brought her to live with me when she was 87. Twice she physically attacked me. The first time, I was able to subdue her. The second time I came face to face with the last demon. It was taking a last stand for her body. I saw it and will never forget it. I invoked the name of Jesus and demanded that it leave my Mother and go back to the pit of hell, in the name of Jesus. From that time until she died a year later, my Mom was back.

Nobody can tell me that demons are not real. I am of sound mind and body and I know what our family went through. I also know how it started. DO NOT FOOL WITH A OUIJA BOARD!

This is entirely consistent with what the Ouija Board is about. And so, this is exactly what can happen with people. And like you said, sometimes some people can be protected when they may not have been aware of what was going on. But, they wouldn't be protected if they continually sought it out.

If people want to invite those beings from the world of the fallen angels who rebelled against God and His Word -- then whomever does this and invites those kinds of demons will get exactly what they ask for.

It's not something to be fooled with.

Another area of “interaction” of the fallen angels and their evil ways — with mankind — in the same way they always operate.... “by deception” ...

Spiritual warfare is an art to be learned with experience. It allows you to learn discernment and not experience fear (which is what opens you up to their influence) when you encounter darkness. You are a better person for going through this experience and not getting “burned” as you handled it correctly.

If you think you are strong when you do battle with a demon, you will lose. This may be hard to understand, but it is by being weak that you have the greatest strength.

Well, those metric socket sets would be a different tool of the devil -- with "devil" being used in "very loose terms" ... LOL ...

In this case, we're talking about a very powerful and created being (one who has been around since the Garden of Eden) -- who prowls around on this earth looking for victims that he can destroy (destroy their lives and anyone around them). And he's also said to engage in making continuous and slanderous accusations against those who are God's people -- to the judge of the universe, in order to discredit them.

I think we're talking about two different types here ... LOL ...

Grow up people. It's just a board.

And along with that, we're also going to be told (which I'm sure is coming soon), that there are no fallen angels, there is no Satan, and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob does not exist, and He did not give His written Word to us (i.e., the "Bible") ... LOL ...

Yeah, automatic writing. She did that too. I still have some of the things she wrote while some entity was channeling. It was all about the early Spanish Conquistadores in South America. Weird stuff.

Being a strong Christian and knowing how demons operate helped me to know what to do. I was scared, but determined to get rid of that intruder once and for all. I’m sure that my grandparents got rid of a host of them way back when they prayed over her.

Ever look into Scripture what it says about sorcery and divination? That should be enough to thwart any desire by Christians to have anything to do with that sort of thing.

Scripture is emminently clear about the veracity of prophets: 100% accuracy. Failure of any prophecy is a capital offense for a prophet. If they're wrong about any one thing, Scripture states that they're not speaking God's Word.

Secondly, exposure to the occult opens one up to nepharious influences. Satan and his minions have one goal in mind, and the use of deceit, sophistry and illusion are their tools. AFAIC, Ouija boards are no differnt than automatic writing. That outright gives me the Heebee-Jeebees to no end. While Christians can not be possessed, that isn't to say that can't be tormented by demons. Soliciting occult influence is an invitation for something wicked this way to come and darken one's doorway.

The same goes with occult in movies and music. As far as the former, the veracity of the occult is pretty adroit. Hollywood spares no expense with regard to researching occult phenomenon and the integrity of its depiction in movies is pretty solid. I don't care how accurate the depictions may be, e.g., Rosemary's Baby, Ammityville Horror, Excorcist,, I don't need to be exposed to that material. Neither do I care to listen to music that glorifies evil, violence and things pertaining to the occult and demons.

Satan wants nothing less than for he to be worshipped. Songs who's lyrics espouse violence, vulgarity, and embrace the occult are nothing more than hymns that pay him homage. For example, Sympathy For the Devil, who and or what is the object of the song? The lyrics to Spirit in the Sky espouse a totally contradictory doctrinal position. Imagine this, one of the biggest hits of all time, i.e., There's a Time borrowed verses diretly out of God's Word, that is the book of Ecclesiates.

One dismisses the supernatural influence of the occult at their own risk. It is true that science deals exclusively with the empirical, but it is illogical to dismiss the existance of the supernatural; doing so offhandedly is nothing more than anti-supernatural bias which is in and of itself fundamentally illogical.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. - Eph 6:12 (KJV)
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Rom 8:38,39 (KJV)

You were saying ...

If your faith is strong, why are you worried about demons?

The amount of faith (i.e., "strong" or not) is not the issue here. The issue is basically if you "invite" demons into your life, you will get them. The point is to not invite demons into your life.

And thus, the warning for all others to be aware of that.

If these things worked anywhere near the way you are implying, we'd be up to your necks in Anti-Christs and Demon-spawn.

Ummmm..., from the looks of it in our society, I would say that's the way it is ... LOL ...
