It is very easy to say some claim this or claim that, but until I see the evidence you have for such conjecture, I cannot even begin to debate it.

He offers a good reasoned argument that gives me much more information then a sentence, thus allowing me to actually look into his claim. Then I can come back with a reasonable reply that will set us off on a healthy debate where we respect each other and learn from each other.
If there is any smugness it comes from you, because you automatically claim I am closed to debate.
