Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem ~ Origins

Genesis Chapter 20

1. And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

2. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.

3. But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.

4. But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, LORD, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?

5. Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.

6. And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

7. Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

8. Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were sore afraid.

9. Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

10. And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?

11. And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

12. And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

13. And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

14. And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and womenservants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

15. And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

16. And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

17. So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.

18. For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

How very interesting...and you are RIGHT! Jewish lineage IS determined through the Mother.
Also, in the Genealogy of Yeshua given in the First Chapter of Matthew, there are Four Women mentioned:

Rahab of Jericho....A "Professional" Harlot,
Ruth.... A Moabite and a convert to Judaism,
Bathsheva....An Adulteress and possible accessory to the murder of her husband,
And Mary of Nazareth....who at first glance would have been classified as an "unwed" Teenage Mother.

The Women of the Bible have much to Teach us about God's Infinite Redemptive Love and Mercy, and how He uses the simple and foolish things of the world to confound the wise.

This Painting, from an Islamic Website,
Attempts to place Sarah in a Subordinate Role To Hagar
"I pray for those who are blind and deaf to His truth - that their hearts are softened, and their hate is subdued. May those who continue to plan evil be snared in traps of their own making."

Amen To Your Prayer, LibertyRocks.

Not on this thread, no. But in almost every concordance in the NT I have ever read, the only thing it says about Sarah is that she was Isaac’s mother.
There are many, many women who get short shrift in the concordances, if they are even mentioned at all.
Manoah
Does anyone even knpw who she was?

What amuses me about liberal theologians is how they INSIST that the Bible (Especially the Old Testament) is "Sexist and Patriarchal". However, in comparison to the religions and cultures of the time, and even the contemporary cultures of the same geographic area, The Jewish and Christian Traditions are Far More Fair to Women than say, the 7th century Middle East. And yet, Liberals seem to align themselves with a culture that condones "Honor killing." Go Figure.

I am sorry. I did mean to say Mamoah’s wife. My bad. What I meant to point out was that the wife was the one the angel of G-d spoke to.

“And the angel of HaShem appeared unto the woman, and said unto her: ‘Behold now, thou art barren, and hast not borne; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son.”
This is the Hebrew tradition of Dual Paternuty. Abba in Heavem abd Abba on earth. That every child has two fathers and only obe mother.

I posted in a hurry after just returming from a Dr. appointment. Had some tests done and was a still a tad woozed out. I am not usually so careless, but it has always been one of my pet peeves that all the evils of the world are lain at the feet of women in the Bible...
I am sorry. I know this isn’t really a discussion thread so I will try to hold this stuff back from now on.

Hebrews insisted that the women be as educated as the men. It wasn’t until the Hellenization of the Hebrews that women were pushed into the “kitchen” so to speak.

They align themselves with it because they hate God.
Liberalism has nothing to do with the freedom and education of women , they just use that as an excuse to manipulate them into doing what they want.
(take a good look at how they actually treat the women... what amazes me is how many not so bright women there are who actually fall for their tricks )

Interesting concept , thanks.
I sort of figured out what you meant before because I am used to having to figure out what I have written without my glasses (don’t feel bad I skip over entire sentences without them )
Hope you feel better.

Pro 31:1 The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
Pro 31:2 What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
Pro 31:3 Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
Pro 31:4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
Pro 31:5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.
Pro 31:6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
Pro 31:7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
Pro 31:8 Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
Pro 31:9 Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
Pro 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
Pro 31:11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
Pro 31:12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
Pro 31:13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
Pro 31:14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
Pro 31:15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
Pro 31:16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
Pro 31:17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
Pro 31:18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
Pro 31:19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
Pro 31:20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
Pro 31:21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
Pro 31:22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
Pro 31:23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
Pro 31:24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
Pro 31:25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
Pro 31:26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
Pro 31:27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Pro 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Pro 31:29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Pro 31:30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Pro 31:31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Ah...the Multi-Tasking, Efficient, Smart, Proverbs 31 Woman!

That would be me! LOL!

Seriously, it was THAT passage that broke through my hippie-feminist-hard-boiled heart and SAVED ME!

Thank you for posting that Lera! It brought back a thirty year old memory of the first time i read it.
