Mormon Doctrine is finally going out of print. The late apostle Bruce R. McConkies interpretation of LDS theology was a common sight in the homes of active Mormons for decades. Even today, its often seen in the homes of older Mormons. In fact, it will likely be decades before the book becomes difficult to find in used bookstores or ebay, etc.
Peggy Fletcher Stack of the Salt Lake Tribune wrote an excellent article about the popular but polarizing Mormon Doctrine. McConkies book was written as an authoritative index of beliefs, but in truth it caused much controversy; in fact as much from outside critics as within the hierarchy of the Mormon Church. The first edition of Mormon Doctrine and a copy of that must be considered rare prompted the LDS leadership to propose more than 1,000 changes. Eventually, in the early 1960s, McConkie revised Mormon Doctrine...
Nevertheless, as an active Mormon who grew up in the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, I can attest that the many times I or others had a dispute on theology, Mormon Doctrine was the first place we went to check and see who was right.
According to Fletcher Stacks article, a key problem with the first edition was severe attacks on the Roman Catholic Church. Later problems with the book were its content regarding blacks. You can page Salvation or NYer for that I am not in the mood/energy to point out what us Catholic FR members get ignorantly slammed by.
HEY! When are you going to apologize for calling honest people LIARS and DECEIVERS!!!
”I think people here should concentrate on posting uplifting articles.”
Wow what an idea! Don’t hold your breath though. The anti-Mormon gang has taken over this joint.
I agree Lovey.
That’s funny.
On FR if someone makes a post, you’re free to respond to it. You don’t have to be “invited”, but I appreciate your courtesy.
I give them kudos as well, but it doesn’t change the fact that their doctrine is suspect.
HEY! When are you going to apologize for calling honest people LIARS and DECEIVERS!!!
Don’t like it, don’t get on the Religion Forum.
Simple really.
I always get a kick out of n00bs who try to manage FR and tell others what to do and how to do it.
Then do it.
You made the point, not me. It’s ok, I’ll be on the look out.
Its like those people who call Limbaugh and tell him how to run his radio show.
You’re right, I live in Utah and I have never met a nicer group of people. They make the best neighbors, coworkers, employees.
For the most part they seem very sincere and serious about their religion. It’s really very heartbreaking.
Sorry, the link to the story didn’t come through, so I have no idea what the picture is about.
Hint: The man on the left is not Mormon. Than man on the right is Mormon.
Ok, so? The point is?
