Glenn Beck – Too Stupid for Words
Bible Wheel Blog ^ | May 29, 2010 at 8:48 pm | R. A. McGough

Posted on 05/31/2010 4:54:56 AM PDT by CalvaryJohn

Here’s a snippet from Glenn Beck’s radio show 5/27/10 – this one clip should eternally disqualify Glenn Beck as a commentator on religion in the eyes of all informed listeners:

Here is a transcript provided by RazorKiss that starts at about 38 seconds into the clip (link):

Glenn: “…the Dead Sea Scrolls, you know what they are? Stu, do you know what the Dead Sea Scrolls are? Stu: Well, of course I do… Glenn: Now, c’mon, most people don’t. Stu: Well, I heard of them, I don’t really know Glenn: You don’t really know. You have no idea why they were there. Sara average person doesn’t know. Any idea, take a guess on why the Dead Sea Scrolls were there, or anything else. Sara(?): Something religious. Glenn: Okay, good. Even though I’ve explained this on this program a couple of times, I’m glad to see that even the people that work with me don’t even listen. So here’s what happened. When Constantine decided that he was going to cobble together an army, he did the Council of Nicea, right, Pat? Pat: Yea. Glenn: The Council of Nicea, and what they did is brought all of the religious figures together, all the Christians and then they said, “Ok, let’s put together the Apostles’ Creed, let’s you know, you guys do it.” So they brought all their religious scripture together, that’s when the Bible was first bound and everything else. And then they said, “Anybody that disagrees with this is a heretic and off with their head!” Well, that’s what the Dead Sea Scrolls are. The Dead Sea Scrolls are those scriptures that people had at the time that they said, “They are destroying all of this truth.” Whether it’s truth or not is up to the individual, but at that time those people thought that this was something that needed to be preserved and so they rolled up the scrolls and put them in clay pots and they put them in the back of caves where no one could find them. They were hidden scripture because everything was being destroyed that disagreed with the Council of Nicea and Constantine. That’s what those things are.”

Schleitheim has done a hilarious analysis here. Glenn Beck is simply too stupid for words. It is little wonder that Liberty University thought he was a worthy choice to speak at their commencement ceremony.

I was at Qumran in 1988...

I also saw the Dead Sea scrolls on display in Jerusalem...

They had them spread out around a large circular display structure and under glass...

As I recall parts were identified as the Book of Isaiah...

I agree with your solution. Just turn Beck off. The problem we have today is whenever someone doesn't like certain speech, they want to make a law and control what is broadcast over the air. [this is my country]

I agree with your solution. Just click out of this thread. The problem we have today is whenever someone doesn't like certain speech, they want to make a law and control what is posted online. (Like controlling comments by Coldwater Creek)

Oh, did I say that? Actually, not my thoughts at all. But I thought it'd be fun quoting your own philosophical standard -- applied to you. (Poster, heal thyself)

Upon first glance, I didn't see CC making any "ban Beck" comments, did you?

And if you're talking about the thread poster's (CalvaryJohn's) initial comment, he talked about qualifications on certain subjects...and how some people disqualify themselves...which is distinct from having somebody else come and disqualify you from speaking on certain subjects.

He's saying Beck has disqualified himself as being any reliable authority on certain subjects -- like religion. (Too bad Liberty University flunked in taking this counsel)

But, my initial point to you sticks: If you don't like either what CalvaryJohn or Coldwater Creek said, then listen to your own lecture: Just click out of this thread vs. trying to "control" certain assessments posters have of Beck.

And if you don't think you're trying to "control" anybody's thoughts on this thread, fine. Maybe you aren't. But then don't introduce the topic that you think others are, then. Play by the same standard you're applying to others.

The Mormons have significant documentation issues across the board. It’s not surprising that he would try to paint Christendom with the same brush.

Amen.

(I even like your flame-resistant subtlety on that first part in tremendously understating it!)

From the post, Glenn Beck excerpt: When Constantine decided that he was going to cobble together an army, he did the Council of Nicea, right, Pat? The Dead Sea Scrolls are those scriptures that people had at the time that they said, “They are destroying all of this truth.”

Well, this is probably as bad as a radio commentator can screw up something.

This is terribly embarrassing for anybody who even pretends to be "religious."

But it also shows Beck's Mormon bias toward Constantine, who Mormon leaders have been thrashing for his role in putting together the Council that elaborated the Nicene Creed.

What a lot of people don't realize is how strongly Mormons attack the Christian creeds, even enshring these attacks as Mormon "scripture" -- like the following:

Lds founder Joseph Smith claimed he was trying to figure out "which of all the sects was right...which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that ALL their CREEDS were an ABOMINATION in his sight; that those professors were ALL corrupt..." (Joseph Smith - History vv. 18-19, Pearl of Great Price)

So Beck is just confirming his Mormon beliefs -- that ALL creeds of Protestants, Catholic and Orthodox are putrid to his god(s).

Thank you Colofornian.

You apparently still know what it is to FReep. People have different points of view. I come here to express and debate, not to shut people down or to just read my own point of view.

I’ve had my mind changed a good number of times right here.

I made it clear I wasn’t trashing the totality of his work, twice. Yet too many posters react without a closer look at the thing.

Never addressed that. I listen to Becks Radio program everyday and enjoy it. My point to Coldwater was if people don't like his show, then don't listen.

But, my initial point to you sticks: If you don't like either what CalvaryJohn or Coldwater Creek said, then listen to your own lecture: Just click out of this thread vs. trying to "control" certain assessments posters have of Beck.

My statement to Coldwater was congruent with her comment.

OK, but Nag Hammadi was the source of a lot of gnostic heresies, like the Gospel of Thomas. I love the guy, but he sure doesn’t know religious history. Even if he mixed up the two, he was basically saying those heretical writings were the truth!
I do think Mormonism has a lot to do with this shortcoming.

You: Never addressed that.

Ya wanna explain then what your then cryptic meaning you apply to these words? "...they want to make a law and control what is broadcast over the air."???

You did mean at least "ban" some of what Beck says, right?

There was nothing cryptic in my statement unless your paranoid.

Reiterating what I posted to you before:

I think that both of us was saying that Glenn can and should say anything that he wants, but we are free to turn him off if we don’t like what is being said.

Wow. If he is that stupid, no wonder he fell for Mormonism.

BTW, his statements are direct parroting of Mormon teaching which shows THEY have no idea of what the DSS are.

I recognized right off that he was confusing Nag Hammadi with the DSS. That does not change the fact that it shows just how ignorant the LDS are when it comes to such things and that he is parroting LDS doctrine without having done research.

BTW, I first semester Bible student can tell you the difference between the NG and DSS, even at Liberty University.

Thus, they are fighting a Holy War with someone who is simply warning people of the wolves in sheep’s clothing WHILE HE IS ALSO ADVISING THEM TO TURN TO GOD TO PREPARE FOR THE DARK TIMES AHEAD.

- - — -
And soon he will be advising the to turn to Mormonism.

This faux pas shows that he doesn’t research things well and just parrots (at least religiously) Mormonism and therefore cannot be trusted.

Like somehow THIS is something 99.9999% of people would honestly give a riff about someone getting wrong.

- - - - -
Then count us in the .0001%.

If you are attempting to speak on something, at least know basic facts. And this is a basic fact in Church history/Biblical Studies.

First week, freshman course. I know, I taught it.

those scrolls do confirm that our Bible translations, especially the King James, was right on the money.

Well...you are half right.

His point is valid...these were scrolls that were perseved becayse people BELIEVED them to be true....where is the problem.

- - - - -
His point is not only factually incorrect, but it is a recitation of LDS doctrine that specifically is designed and used to trash the Bible and make it unreliable (as well as promote the idea of a ‘universal apostasy’) so therefore there is a ‘need’ for the Book of Mormon and Mormonism.

IOW, it is spreading Mormon propaganda.

So Glenn B. in this instance grabbed a bunch of liberal pro-Gnostic Christian-despising academic distortion of history and misapplied it to the Dead Sea Scrolls.

- - —
Not even that, he just stated what he has been told in his Mormon church. I’m serious, his statement is almost verbatim of what I was taught when I was Mormon.

The gnostic “gospel” of Thomas was not newly discovered per se, this was a more complete form of that writing.

Disagree on Beck saying they were the truth, what he did say was it was up to the individual to discover for themselves whether they were true or untrue.

His larger point was that in earlier times the religious hid their “sacred’ writings to protect them, which led to the whole bit about storing them in jars etc.

Which is an observable fact, when Saddam’s Iraq fell, there was handwringing over the antiquities that were “lost” when in fact the curators of the Mesopotamian Museums simply locked them in sub basement vaults and then flooded the basement with raw sewage in order to keep them safe from looters either public or governmental..

Nothing against you Glenn but, your “little” history lesson is just plain wrong.

Those clay pot scriptures were written a couple thousand years before the Council Nicea.
