Has Rowan Williams Damned Henry VIII to Hell?
The Daily Telegraph (UK) ^ | 5/19/10 | Christopher Howse

King Henry VIII might be in hell, the Archbishop of Canterbury suggested the other day in a sermon.

There was an intake of breath among the congregation, yet I wondered if I'd misheard the Archbishop. I hadn't, for the text is on Rowan Williams's website: "If Henry VIII is saved (an open question, perhaps) it will be at the prayers of John Houghton."

John Houghton was the Prior of the Charterhouse in London, where Dr Williams was preaching, on the 475th anniversary of the martyrdom of him and 15 other monks at the instigation of Henry VIII. Prior Houghton was declared a saint by the Pope in 1970.

"In many ages and many places," the Archbishop said, "authorities even more appalling than Henry VIII have believed that they could abolish God and the cross of God; and they have had to discover that while they may vanquish, they cannot destroy."

A Church of England almshouse for old men was established on the site of the Charterhouse, in 1611, the year that the Authorised Bible was published. The almshouse is still home to 40 men, and thanks to its enterprising Master, James Thomson, there is healing for historical wounds of division between Catholics and Protestants in an annual service of commemoration. So Dr Williams should be able to speak freely without being taken amiss.

I'm kind of curious.....if Henry's just made it to hell....where's he been hanging out all this time???

Is there some sort of waiting room? If so, he's been there since late January of 1547....truly a long time to wait.

And....later on.....if this guy is wrong....does Henry get to leave hell??? If so, does he get to seek vengence on the guy who sent him there??

Lots of really cool theological (or just plain silly) questions - depending upon one's point of view.

Has Rowan Williams Damned Henry VIII to Hell?

He does not have that authority. Both of these gentlemen will one day stand before that Authority. Mr. Williams at least still retains the option to make any adjustments that may be necessary.

He does not have that authority

Nor did he claim it. He stated "If Henry VIII is saved ....."

The question is certainly open to debate.

Regardless of any killings of other indivuduals, chopping off the head of your own wife when she has the nerve to have a miscarriage and a daughter certainly raises the possibilty of "If Henry VIII is saved ....."

This is an interesting picture, because it looks authentic and from the time but Anne Boleyn was executed with a sword, and I believe the area was on a patch of ground called Tower Green. Not up on a scaffold like this depicts.

I guess the artist was not in the know? Out of the loop? A columnist?

He is not the Pope nor pretending to be in charge. From what I can read, he is just admitting that it is possible that Henry the murderous adulterer is in hell.

In the 16th Century, before photogarphy was invented and before you could travel 200 miles in less than one hour by booking a flight, artists did the best they could.

The important fact was not the fact that the Queen's head was chopped off with a sword or an axe.

The important fact was that the Queen's head WAS chopped off.

Yeah. Having your wife, the Queen, beheaded, a sin that gets noticed, by more than those on earth.

But he wasn’t too good to his first wife, and she was just lucky enough to have parents like Ferdinand and Isabella that helped her keep HER head.

And woe to those who married him after.
