Sex abuse lawsuit names San Antonio archdiocese

A West Texas teen filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Archdiocese of San Antonio and Archbishop Jose Gomez alleging repeated sexual assaults by a parish priest, who he says the church's leadership should have known was abusive.

The allegations came just days after Gomez was named to a high-profile post leading the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, where he is scheduled to be formally introduced to parishioners in May.

The lawsuit accuses the Rev. John M. Fiala of repeatedly sexually assaulting the teen, including twice forcing him to have sex at gunpoint when Fiala was the pastor at Sacred Heart of Mary Parish in the remote community of Rocksprings. The lawsuit alleges the incidents occurred in 2007 and 2008, during Gomez's tenure overseeing a swath of south and west Texas.

“Do you doubt what I wrote in that post?”

Of course.

“Are reporters supplying erroneous facts?”

Of course.

“Is everyone wrong but Rome?”

Not everyone. Just you.

Well, considering you can’t even get the date right when Kiesle was defrocked (even after it’s been posted dozens of times today) your opinions carry less weight than ever.

A church filled with excuses and very little remorse.

How much remorse can you expect from a church that claims to be the One True Church?

I guess I'm still surprised at the number of "conservative" Roman Catholics who support Ratzinger's "global authority" encyclical and defend his blatant disregard for molested children under his care.

It is not "one." And it is not "true." I'm not sure it's even a "church."

This from an anonymous poster on an internet forum! How convincing--not! ROFL!

“Well, thank goodness you’re not talking about me since I do not have a “history of making personal remarks to others on the RF.””

Truly is it said that mankind’s greatest talent is self-deception.

You have a “history of making personal remarks to others on the RF” that challenges the fossil record.

All of them living, breathing fellow Christians.

We are to pray for our fellow men and women to the Triune God alone.

I hope that you would qualify as a living and breathing fellow Christian, and so it is legitimate to ask for your prayers, whether or not it is also legitimate to ask for the prayers of others—an issue which I did not raise, as I find it more effective to discuss one or two contentious points at a time. Even if you do not consider me a fellow Christian, as your further line indicates, the duty extends to praying even for non-Christians, and so I trust that you will pray for me.

"Who needs evidence when we have Rome's double-secret assurance?"

This post perfectly summarizes your position and impeaches your voracity. Faced with mutually exclusive narratives automatically assume the Church and its clergy to be guilty and the exculpatory information to be false. I prefer to gather all of the information and weigh it thoroughly before concluding. I hold the credibility of the Vatican far above that of the various news agencies and my own objectivity well above that of the anti-Catholic menopausal dingbats that lurk and post in these threads.

Ah, if only that were true. Sadly, many Roman Catholics on this forum are only concerned with the former and completely oblivious of the latter.

You should feel fortunate: mind reading is forbidden to Catholics on this forum.

I'm pretty sure you mean that facetiously, and that you don't really believe that "All the victims are lying. All the priests are sinless."

When you find some "exculpatory information" you be sure and let us know.

Good for you. Write about what you know.

"When you find some "exculpatory information" you be sure and let us know."

A major agenda objective of the left is the destruction of any moral authority greater than the state. This includes the family and the Church and is evidenced by policy and initiative to undermine both. This is not a new phenomenon. The Church was similarly attacked by the Nazi's in the 1930's with a campaign of so-called immorality trials whose purpose was to establish and reinforce a mental link between the Church and perversion in the public's mind.

Then as now the left had a host of useful idiots that included atheists, hedonists, and rabid anti-Catholic Protestants. Let us not forget the menopausal dingbats, afflicted by any combination of the above, who are certifiably "boil the bunny" crazy when it comes to all things Catholic.

To keep this in the public's eye it is necessary to maintain a steady drum beat of cases, accusations and rumors on the front pages and the broadcast leads. I suppose the only silver lining here is the message that the Church must have contained the problem or you would not have to reach back into the fading past to find new gist for your hate mill.

You have a “history of making personal remarks to others on the RF”

No, I do not. If I did, I would have had many posts pulled, but I haven't.

Your error stems from the fact that Roman Catholic apologists confuse criticism of a church, faith, practice or belief with personal criticisms of individual FReepers. The former is permitted; the latter is forbidden.

But many Roman Catholic apologists cannot grasp the difference. They believe every criticism of their church, faith, practice or belief to be a personal criticism, and so they respond with personal criticisms, and thus it is their posts which get pulled for breaking the FR RF rules.

These disingenuous cries of personal assault are also an underhanded means of controlling the debate. Kind of like -- "Say what I want you to say and don't criticize Rome or else I'll smack you in the face and call you names."

It took me a while to learn how to post within the rules. I encourage you to do the same. It's a much more civil method of discourse and it actually improves your own debating skills.
