Catholic Word of the Day: HOLY DOORS, 04-06-10
CatholicReference.net ^ | 04-05-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

HOLY DOORS

The main doors at the Roman basilicas of St. Peter, Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major; they are kept sealed except during the periodic jubilee years. The Pope personally opens and closes the doors at St. Peter's, nearest to the Vatican Palace, while cardinal legates do the same at the other churches to mark the official beginning and ending of the year of jubilee. These ceremonies symbolize the right of sanctuary, which goes back to pagan times and was actually them observed on the present site of the Lateran.

All items in this dictionary are from Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary, © Eternal Life. Used with permission.

TOPICS: Apologetics; Catholic; History; Theology
KEYWORDS: catholic; catholiclist; rome
For non-Catholics reading this, St. Peter, Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls, and St. Mary Major;

are the four major holy cathedrals of Rome.

If you go to Rome and can visit nothing else -- visit these four churches.

Stational Churches (Virtually visit one each day and pray)

Some pictures of each of those churches in this thread. Maybe we can get some more!

We had a Holy Door for the Holy Year at my parish in Oklahoma, which had spare doors. In my current parish, they’d have to block off a kitchen door or something ;-).
