That is, of course, inaccurate. As I already pointed out Vatican City was not occupied, but also, it must be remembered that the allies pushed the Germans out of Rome in early June, 1944. The war would actually drag on for another 11 months.
Have you ever been to the Vatican? It’s a tiny enclave surrounded by Rome, and surrounded by German troops during WW-II. The Vatican might not have been officially occupied, but the Pope sat in there within mentioning the Holocaust.
During WW-II, it was agreed by all sides that Rome and Paris would not be subject to bombing, shelling or whatever. The rest of Europe was a battlefield.
