Catholic Word of the Day: NOUMENON, 03-20-10
CatholicReference.net ^ | 03-20-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

NOUMENON

The essence of a thing. In Kantian philosophy the mind can only postulate but never know the essence of things. The essence of God, the soul, the moral law, and anything else thus become suppositions of practical reason, and people are to act on these presuppositions "as if" they really existed. This makes life livable. (Etym. Greek nooumenon, that which is apprehended by thought.)

I know that sometimes my mind is not capable of grasping ideas, but this is the first time I have ever seen this word! New word -- older idea! LOL!

So does your name agree with the definition above? Is that why you chose it?

Let’s just say that I chose it in the spirit of my own wry sense of humor. I’m not a big fan of Kant for what should be obvious reasons.

I should also add that I’m no great fan of organized religion in general. Even Nietzsche got that one right, “Organized religion invariably makes a mockery of what its founders taught.”

Most of today’s organized religions are little more than elaborate Ponzi schemes peddling sheepery and spiritual slavery.

Cut out the middlemen. They are not your friends.

Sorry you feel that way about religion.

God is the eternal reality.

“The way, the truth and the life.”

Didn’t say that I felt that way about religion, per se, although some of them are downright silly.

You’re not paying attention to what I actualy said, and that’s unfortunate. What I said applies to organized religion - and its middlelmen with an agenda.

I’ll offer a simple observation: that the guy who says he’s Got the Answer and that only he can show you the way also has a busket of prop wash to sell you.

He may, or he may not. Depends who he is and who sent him. This is not an argument against organized religion, but against religious charlatans.
