I have seven ancestors on the Holland Society list...

i have DIRECT bloodlines that men would kill for...

But i cant join the Holland society...

You have to be a male...

But the ancestors can just be related to the men who came here to NY...

In other words if you are a male and the brother or uncle or cousin or nephew of your direct ancestor was the one to come here...

but your actual ancestor didnt...

you can be a member of the Holland Society...

a kick in the teeth...

The funny thing is they expanded the rules to attract morfe members but still just males...

The women ???

Oh we can join the Holland Dames ...which is set up more likme an axilary of the Holland Society than an actual genealogical society...

In other words it supports the males over in the Holland Society but doesnt really acknowledge the lineage of its members...

though the exorborant dues are the same...

I can join the Dutch Settlers of Albany which is more exclusive anfd a whole lot cheaper...

:)

That's way cool.
My mom's family came from Holland but the first record is about a guy who came from Spain. Jaun Sabashton(sp) who immigrated to Holland in 1600 to a town called Kortrick. He took the name of the town, Von Kortrick and then sailed the seas in the 1620’s or so. I guess they didn't like New York and that's how they ended up in Ohio.
If you go there the Courtright name is everywhere. They were farmers and politicians. Political involvement runs deep on both sides of my family.
(But shhhhh, my dad's family was from Sicily, so we don't talk out loud about that political involvement.) Dad's family came in the great immigration move in the 1900’s. When you hear some of the oldsters talk about Ellis Island and how thrilled they were to be here it gives you the chills.
They were Americans first and always once they set foot on dry land.
