The transfer, sale, or reduction of value of Church property. Ecclesiastical law regulates the alienation and sets down specific conditions under which it is to be done. (Etym. Latin alienus, of another, foreign.)

I knew that there were certain rules that forbade the sale of Church property -- such as vessels and vestments -- to the general public. (They must be passed on for Church use only to another Catholic Church, possibly in a third world country.) But I never knew what it was called.

Of course, this definition might refer more to the sale of real property (former Catholic Church or Catholic School sites) to another church or entity also. Anyone with canon law experience or knowledge out there?

“Alienation” is a general term in law, referring to real, personal, or intangible property. “Alienation of affection,” for example, used to be a cause of action in civil law, applied against the person who broke up your marriage or engagement.
