My son in law, Sam, went into the ER with severe abdominal pain the night before last; a CT scan showed a bowel obstruction, tumor, on the right side. He had surgery last night, and 5-6 inches of bowel were removed due to cancer. The doctors said there was no way to foresee this, as he is fairly young. He and my daughter have insurance to take care of the medical expenses, but they have three children under 15. After the surgery, the doctor said he was "cautiously optimistic" but the pathology reports are not due until Thursday, and at that time they'll start to work up a treatment plan.
This is a tremendous unforeseen blow to this nice young family, I'm babysitting for the grandkids while my daughter spends time at the hospital. She's strong, and so is he, their faith is in the Lord. He's Baptist, she's Catholic, they've been happily married 16 years.

Just heard Suzanne Sommers do a segment on Dennis Miller’s
talk show. Very interesting and might be worth a read about
alternatives to the chemo route.

I’d just like to add that I know a woman who had bowel cancer 27 years ago and is still going strong. More people are surviving cancers than ever before. Stay positive, and speak only encouragement and faith!

So sorry to hear this,Judith. It seems like they caught it in time. With today’s miracle treatments, your son-in-law should be around long enough to raise his children, and then some.

NOTE: IF he is going to be off work for a prolonged period of time he needs to file for disability..GET THE LAWYER ON THE FRONT END, not after SS denies him. It will provide them an income.
Such a blessing, to have everyone’s prayers! We haven’t gotten much sleep, so I sat down to read and promptly dozed off. I just woke up, and logged on, and saw all these wonderful posts.
I’ll print them out this afternoon, and send them with my daughter to the hospital, so Sam can hear about all the prayers...thank you so much. FReepers are the best.
That’s good advice. He has a lot of days saved up, vacation and sick time, and his company will let others donate sick days to him if he needs them.

My daughter’s friends from work told her today that they are taking care of the family meals throughout the weekend. Tonight, a big pan of lasagna, a plate of brownies, and some small treats for the kids. Tomorrow, a pot of spaghetti, etc.
I know that they have many many weeks of difficult times ahead, and that’s what I’m there for, to make sure they get meals and enough sleep. But for right now, this help is so welcome! This was a big shock for everyone.
The kids have been at school, and are doing well, but my daughter is looking forward to being home tonight to go through the bedtime routines with them, to bless ALL of them. I have done the best I could, praying with the kids, cuddline, etc., but when you’re worried, there’s NO ONE like Mom to help soothe the anxieties. The girls are going to visit for 5 mins tonight, just to see dad and give him small gifts. The oldest had appendicitis last year, so they know not to expect Dad to be “normal.”
I’ve gotten my dogs fed, changed clothes, and now I’m headed to their house. I’ll spend the night, that way when she wants to go back to the hospital to sit with Sam, she can.
