Our priest today said that Saint Polycarp died at the age of 84 — so doing the math would mean that he was born in the year 82, right.

So maybe he was older when he died.

Hmmm

Most of the time, in the Old Days, by the time anyone was interested in when a person had been born - once he’d become famous - everyone who might have known had died or forgotten. We usually know when a historical figure died, but birth days, until the industrial age, are often guesses.
