Daily Meditation -- February 17, 2010

Day 1 - February 17

Intention:

That we may use these 40 Days for Life to plead for God's mercy and grace upon all those involved in the sin of abortion.

Scripture:

Blow the trumpet in Zion! Proclaim a fast, call an assembly. Gather the people, notify the congregation. Assemble the elders; gather the children and the infants at the breast… Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep and say, "Spare, O Lord, your people."

-- Joel 2:15-17

Reflection:

The toll of abortion cannot be measured. We hear estimates of almost 50 million innocent victims, but that's only one aspect of the harm that has unfolded in abortion's wake. There are also the mothers and fathers of these millions, as well as the grandparents, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins. Unborn lives destroyed. Lives of the living shattered.

It's overwhelming and depressing, but even in the midst of such unfathomable darkness, the church teaches us to have hope. Yes, it was indeed Calvary that followed Christ's 40 days in the desert, but without Calvary there would have been no Resurrection - His victory over death that opened the gates of heaven to those who believe in and follow Him.

The psalmist encourages us to go humbly before God as we seek His will: "A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me… Give me back the joy of your salvation and a willing spirit sustain in me… O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise" (Psalm 51:12, 14, 17).

We are called to be God's messengers; or as the Apostle Paul told the Corinthians: "We are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God" (2 Corinthians 5:20). That is the true message to all we encounter at the abortion centers and in our communities who have been deceived by the Culture of Death. We don't bring condemnation; we bring God's good news.

Prayer:

Lord, we ask for the strength, courage, wisdom, determination and stamina to carry out this mission according to Your will. Guide us, we pray, as we go forth and proclaim Your truth, always doing so with a spirit of love and compassion, as was demonstrated to us by Your Son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray, amen.

From Catholic Exchange -- 40 Days for [Life] Begins Today — Now it is YOUR Turn

40 Days for [Life] Begins Today — Now it is YOUR Turn

February 17th, 2010 by 40 Days for Life

Dear Friends for Life:

The National Prayer Vigil to end abortion is about to begin again!

Yes, tomorrow, February 17, the 40 Days for Life campaign will kick off in 165 cities across the United States, Canada, Australia and Northern Ireland.

165 cities — that’s the most ever for a spring 40 Days for Life campaign!

With almost three feet of snow at some of the locations, we are more appreciative than ever before of all the sacrifices required to pray outside abortion centers at this time of year in much of North America.

It’s a challenge, and it’s a sacrifice — but we know that when two or more are gathered together in Christ’s name, He is there — and He hears our prayer.

It’s worth it!

By the grace of God, 40 Days for Life has already helped to save at least 2,168 children from death by abortion, led 28 clinic workers to walk away from the abortion industry, and contributed to the closure of five abortion centers.

And now YOU have a chance to help shape history as part of this 40 Days for Life campaign!

Just this past fall, many gathered in His name at abortion facilities in 212 communities. We’ve compiled pictures from many of their 40-day vigils into a short, 7-minute video that will give you an amazing look at the heart of 40 Days for Life — people gathered peacefully, united in a common purpose, praying for an end to abortion.

It’s powerful evidence that each of us can take our simple prayers and join something that is much, much larger than any of our individual efforts …

… and a powerful invitation for YOU to get involved …

… to get involved AGAIN if you’ve participated in the
past …

… to get involved FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME if you’ve
never done anything like this before!

Please click here to see the video: http://40daysforlife.com/blog/?p=574

During five previous 40 Days for Life campaigns, more than 300,000 faithful people in 282 cities participated in 40 days of:

* Prayer and fasting for an end to abortion

* Peaceful vigils outside abortion facilities

* Grassroots community outreach and education

The list of the 165 participating cities across the United States, Canadian, Australia, and Northern  Ireland has just been posted online at: http://40daysforlife.com/location.cfm

The 40 Days for Life campaign runs from February 17 to March 28  — and you can help save lives by getting
involved today!

Here’s what to do:

1.) Go to the list of 40 Days for Life locations: http://www.40daysforlife.com/location.cfm

2.) Using the map, or the list of locations, click on the site that is closest to where you live.

3.) You will be redirected to the web page for that local 40 Days for Life campaign.

4.) On that local web page, SIGN UP with your name and e-mail address to get involved and help save lives!

That’s it!

You will then receive information on the plans for your nearby 40 Days for Life, and how you can help make an impact.

Then, help spread the word to everyone you know about 40 Days for Life! The easiest way is to forward this article to your friends, family members, co-workers, and fellow believers.

Looking forward to GREAT things this campaign!

Yours for Life,

[Editors note: This article was adapted from a letter by the National Director, and edited by Mark Ginella, a pro-life advocate working on the San Marcos 40 Days for Life campaign.  He encourages each of you to contact your church or community group, and have them agree to sign up for a full day, where all parishioners come out with their families and join in this beautiful event, which shows Jesus that we still care for the least of our brothers, and that we will pray and work for a time when the dignity of life will be respected by all -- from the moment of conception, until natural death.]
