They were an American anti-drink society with a very restricted membership, you had to be invited to join.

Membership was mostly in New York and adjoining states. They were very active from the 1840s to the Civil War, but sort of died off after that.

The organization survives in Britain as a "friendly society" (i.e. mutual benefit insurance).
