Female priests defy Catholic Church, hope to change it
Washington Post ^ | Januay 23, 2010 | Katie Balestra

Inside a red brick house in Falls Church, Bridget Mary Meehan placed a silver chalice of wine and a plate of flatbread on the coffee table in her living room and prepared to lead a sacred, forbidden ceremony.

"As we gather around this table, this intimate little house church table, let us remember that God is raising us up, all of us," she said, smiling at the four worshipers who had come to hear her say Mass.

Three and a half years ago, Meehan joined a group of Catholic women from across the United States known as the Roman Catholic Womenpriests -- ordained as bishops, priests and deacons, sometimes in secret ceremonies, against Vatican law. The first ceremony took place in 2002, when a renegade bishop ordained seven women in a boat on the Danube River near Passau, Germany. Most, if not all members, have been excommunicated.

The group, which has about 70 women, is one of several nationwide gaining support among U.S. Catholics as more of them begin to question the Vatican's stance on women's role in the Church.

"Our goal is to bring about full equality of women in the Roman Catholic Church," said Meehan, 62. "We love the faith. We love the spirituality. That's why we remain Catholic. We are holding disobedience to an unjust law that discriminates against women. We're willing to go the whole mile with the institution on this."

The movement has a strong following in the Washington region.

Last year, Maureen Fiedler, host of "Interfaith Voices" on WAMU (88.5), organized a fundraiser for her radio program with a special address by the Rev. Roy Bourgeois, a Catholic priest facing excommunication for attending a Womenpriests ordination.

Maybe...someday...the Compost will get it...whatever these gals are doing....it isn’t Roman Catholic....and to “insist” that it is, merely insults whatever Catholic readers of the Post still remain. The editors are idiots.

Nope, it was a little humor, but my ex-M-i-L would have been happy to do it to me, being the fine, upstanding Roman Catholic she always reminded me that she was.

You might want to consider letting your skin get a bit thicker...unless, of course, you enjoy balancing that chip on your shoulder.

Somebody actually gave you guff over the length of your hair?

:) Believe it or not, females are not all sweetness and light. Demanding conformity over temporal and trivial things happens all the time.

I've heard some of my Cradle Catholic friends talk about playing "Mass and Priest" with the help of NECCO.

Kentucky mints worked, too, but NECCO wafers are flat, round and just about the right size. Good times.

I know that. However...I can see them changing a law to allow this to happen. I hope not but...

There’s no such thing as “female priests.” Just a number of misguided women simulating the sacraments. They can neither give nor receive the grace of ordination. Their claims are a waste of time and their gestures are empty and only reported because they are sensational.

Nothing happened here; nothing to see.

When a group splinters off from the "parent" religion, one of the discussion points would be property; does the new religion get a few buildings and a bank account, or do they have enough following to start with nothing and build an infrastructure?

As an example, what happened when Henry VIII (??) started the Church of England? Did he take the Catholic churches, monasteries, statues and other holdings, etc., or did he fund brand new buildings and other assets from the royal treasury?

In the same vein, you may wish to reconsider your brand of humor regarding this subject here on FR.

I've read quite similar "imaginings" from others in the Religion forum, and I doubt that they were joking.

Prior to reading some of the stuff I've seen here, I would have gladly gone along with your joke.

Not so much anymore.

Ecclesia Non Grata. These women are complete apostates and have abandoned any an all affiliation with the Catholic Church by the very actions they define as being in union with it. They have excommunicated themselves, given grave scandal to any that witness them, and are awash in a morass of mortal sin. May God in His mysterious ways convert them back to ecclesiastical normalcy, and have mercy on their souls...

Your choice. Anger is a burden, only if you choose to carry it.

it's hardly anger.

I just don't automatically assume good will on the part of protestants where matters of my faith are concerned.

And that started from reading posts from people here, who quite obviously aren't kidding.

"I just don't automatically assume good will on the part of protestants where matters of my faith are concerned."

So there are Christians and there are Protestants, eh? You sound like my ex-Mother-in-Law, who triggered her daughter to abuse our son when she couldn't get him into the "True Church".

As I have said before, we are all Christians and we must hang together or we will surely hang separately.

Uh, what?

Who's "burdened" now, lol?

There are "Catholics" and there are "Protestants."

I would have assumed such a comment, observation is about as inocuous as it gets, but, alas, wrong again...

why would these women want to be part of a Church that doesn’t want them?

There are no female priests in the Latin Mass. Thank God.
