Winning is part of sports and often God is praised by athletes when that happens. Rarer though, is the athlete who praises God even in the midst of crushing disappointment.
But Colt McCoy, quarterback for the University of Texas Longhorns, took the opportunity to speak about his faith last night when ABCs Lisa Salters asked him how it felt to watch the BCS Championship game against Alabama from the sidelines.
I always give God the glory. I never question why things happen the way they do. God is in control of my life. And I know that if nothing else, Im standing on the Rock, McCoy stated.
McCoy had every reason to express frustration and disappointment last night. The senior took a hit that damaged his shoulder during his teams opening drive, ended his college career and, if it didnt doom Texas to defeat, it certainly had a hand in the teams 37 21 loss to Alabama.

I have never been as proud of a losing team as I was last night of my ‘Horns.
McCoy and all the Longhorns showed pure 100% class and grace under pressure. And they never quit.
I have never heard a post-game interview where he failed to give God the glory. Colt McCoy is a young man who will go far in this life — and beyond.

Wise well beyond his years.
What a class act Colt McCoy is. He waited all of his life to be where he was last night and some folks want to challenge his “toughness” for not playing. If he could have been on that field helping the Longhorns he would have been out there. I look forward to watching this kid on Sundays.
I loved Colt’s interview. He stands on the rock. Hate that he was injured. However,... Roll Tide Roll!
I have a newfound respect for this young man. To God be the Glory!
“I loved Colts interview. He stands on the rock. Hate that he was injured. However,... Roll Tide Roll!”
My sentiments exactly!
Colt regularly holds Bible studies with members of the team. He is a fine fine Christian man. I have always loved and respected him and even as an OU fan, I root for him. Hated seeing him hurt last night. God Bless you Colt.
A young man of character and a class act. Roll Tide Roll!
McCoy’s injury turned out to be less important than Texas Coach Mack’s unfathomable boneheaded shovel-pass call with 23 seconds to go in the 1st half with a rookie QB, which resulted in a Tide TD.
Bump that!!!
This is the Religion Forum and we are admiring McCoy as the fine Christian young man that he is, unafraid and unashamed of giving the glory to God. Problem with that???
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28
What a class act. Even beyond the religious aspect of that interview . . . he almost spent more time congratulating Alabama than he did answering the reporters questions about HIM.
We didnt get beat.
In defeat, the Longhorns exhibited some of the greatest football heroics Ive ever witnessed. The great Colt McCoywinningest quarterback ever in college historywas sidelined by severe injury for 58 of 60 minutes. Yet, with 3 minutes left, the Horns trailed by just 3 points and had the ball, a 19-yr-old quarterback at the helm.
Incredible.
Like many of yall, Ive been an athlete for most of my life. We play sports for one or more of the following reasons:
1. Its fun.
2. Its good for our health.
3. We learn unique life-lessons from the experience.
4. Its the best way for guys to get the attention of cute cheerleaders (just kidding sort of ).
Reason #3 predominates in my mind. Theres no pain quite like physical pain; no challenge quite like a physical challenge. Growing up in Canajoharie NY, the life-lessons I learned as a varsity wrestler on a championship team served me well at West Point. After these many years, I remain convinced that Plebe Year would have broken me, but for my high school wrestling experience.
Did you hear Colt after the game last night? The priceless life-lessons learned as a Longhorn leader really shone through. As he spoke (through his own pain), all I could think was:
This young man will succeed at whatever he does in life. I just know it.
These life-lessons are Gods gift to the athleteprovided the athlete is humble enough to retain them. In this regard, the Texas football team has impressed me most profoundly.
From my seats in Section 101 of Royal Memorial Stadium, Ive witnessed with pride my Longhorns start every game by bursting through the south tunnel, double-timing to the north end zone, and taking a kneein prayer. Every single one of them.
Lessons learned, reapplied through the course of life. Values reinforced to enable these lessons to stick. This process is not accidental. It is Mission One of Mack Brown, the finest coach in all collegiate football.
Today I will take a moment to thank the Lord for my champions, the coaches and players of the University of Texas football team. Wont you join me?
Texas
FIGHT!
