Catholic Word of the Day: INDIVIDUATION, 01-06-10
CatholicReference.net ^ | 01-06-10 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random):

INDIVIDUATION

The basic philosophical reason that distinguishes a creature both from the universal or class to which he or she (or it) belongs and from every other individual in that category. Among human beings, their individuation is mainly due to the fact that each one has his own numerically distinctive, separately created immortal soul.

Thus a human clone would not be an individual because they do not have a soul. Am I correct here?

Also this is what we (Catholics) all say about the aborted babies. They are individual people/babies with an immortal soul.

Comments, anyone?

Yeah. Ping me when the word for the day is "Subsidiarity."

I've wondered about that, too ... if it's the same person, how can it be a different person?

However, I think the reasoning is that, in spite of efforts to produce a genetically-identical copy, there is always change or damage to the DNA, thus producing a unique person.

We can be sure, I think, that God will not permit there to be "people" walking around who do not have souls.
