'Last Supper' dispute over site splits Israel, Vatican

The Israeli government seems to be embracing the Christmas spirit. This week it is organizing carols and tree giveaways in Jerusalem, bus service to Bethlehem and even a fireworks show in Nazareth with an apparent eye on burnishing the nation's reputation for religious diversity.

But Israel won't be giving the Christmas gift near the top of the Vatican's wish list this year: possession of a Mount Zion holy site where Jesus Christ is said to have gathered his disciples for the Last Supper.

The Roman Catholic Church has been fighting for more than 450 years to win back control over the sanctuary, also known as the Holy Cenacle, which was seized from Franciscan monks during the Ottoman Empire around 1551.

(snip)

Franciscan officials in Jerusalem, who serve as custodian for several Christian holy sites in Israel, expressed hope that it would one day return to their hands.

Franciscans "have a special attachment," said Father Athanasius Macora, secretary of a Franciscan commission monitoring holy sites. "It was our mother house and headquarters."

He noted that the Holy Cenacle also is revered as the site where, according to Christian faith, the Holy Spirit appeared before the disciples on the first Pentecost.

But like many holy sites in this deeply religious city, Christians are not the only group with historic claims to the Cenacle, which rests on a hill just outside the Old City walls. It sits atop the Tomb of David, where some Jews believe their ancient king was buried. And during the Ottoman period, the Cenacle was used as a mosque.

The current building on the Cenacle site is believed to have been constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, although parts of the structure's foundation are said to date to the 2nd century.

Gee, given Jesus was descended from the House of David, through Joseph, his earthly father (so to speak), can’t the Israeli’s and Christians work it out and cooperate as a shared site of mutual importance, the lower portion, the tomb of David, their show, and above, the Cenacle, the Christian portion? As for the muslims, they usurped enough of the Holy Land over the centuries via arab and turk invasions; tell them to take a hike given they’ve already effed up everything regarding the temple mount headache.

Quit your whining. The Israeli government won’t let Jews have the Temple Mount - the holiest site in Judaism.

Uh, I don't this is much of a selling point to the Jews...they are sticklers for actual lines from David, not made up ones...magritte

They can’t let them have it. It belongs to Muslims now.

I am curious to know why you think Jesus´ ties to David are ´made up´.

Is there any evidence other than ´we don´t like Jesus´ or `we don´t like Christians´?

Maybe the Jews can allow temporary use of this facility for the celebration following the potential canonization of Pius XII.

***Gee, given Jesus was descended from the House of David, through Joseph, his earthly father***

NO HE WAS NOT! Jesus decended through the line of Mary. If you look at the geneology of Joseph you will see he came down through the line of Solomon, to Jechonias (Coniah). the Scripture says no son of Jechonias will EVER sit on the throne of Israel.

Mat 1:11 And Josias begat Jechonias (Coniah)and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

Jer 22:30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man [that] shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.

David’s other son Nathan was the ancestor of Mary.

Luk 3:23 ¶ And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was [the son] of Heli,

Othr ancient non-biblical texts also refer to Mary as the daughter of Heli.

The original building destroyed along with all the others in the Roman invasion of 70AD.

But don’t worry! There is an immitation in the US built Jim Bakker before he took a spill.

Ok; assuming you’re correct, then why did the Old Testament prophecy state that the Messiah would come via the House of David? Was Mary (Miriam) of that House? I am aware that Jewish tradition claim a child is Jewish because of the mother being Jewish, however does that apply to the lineage (of David) alone as well? Educate the ignorant, if you are the rabbi, please.

Gee, given Jesus was descended from the House of David, through Joseph, his earthly father (so to speak),

There are four things that are important here:

1. Miriam is a daughter who has no brothers
and is descended from King David.

2. Joseph is descended from King David.
But he is from a line prohibited to inherit.

3. The inheritance exception granted for the daughters of Zelophehad
(These were daughters who had no brothers)
is in effect (Numbers 26,27,36; Joshua 17; 1 Chronicles 7 ).

4. Joseph and Miriam are married ( each descended from King David)
thus providing Miriam with permanent inheritance
of the Kingship of David for her to pass on to her son Yah'shua.

Check her ancestors. She is decended from David through his other son Nathan.

Look at it this way. This is theological proof that Jesus was NOT the physical son of Joseph.

Oh, I think that WON’T happen. :)

I think many Israelis have been lied to by their left wingers into believing Pius XII was evil to their grandparents. Sad.

Thank you. (Embarrassed Christian).

I would not be embarrassed.

I'll bet 99% of Christians would not have known that.

Blessings on you and your family.

Jesus was a Jew.

Descent from David made up? Maybe. But who are these Jews who’d claim the like?
