Understanding the True Spirit of Christmas

If I came up to you and asked you how what the spirit of Christmas means to you, how would you respond? Let’s see if your answers would match the answers I would expect if I did ask. I think that if I asked that question some would answer saying that the Spirit of Christmas is about being with your friends or relatives for the Holidays. Yet the reality for too many people is that spending Christmas with their loved ones, if they go so far as to actually call them “loved” ones often becomes a chore, as many people try to get through the Holidays tolerating the behaviors of some of these so called “loved ones”, or putting up with the annoying quirks and/or their polarizing, controversial opinions. I would also expect people to answer that the true spirit of Christmas is about giving. Yes, this is true, though up to a point. But the giving they are hinting at is of a different nature.

That’s a good ad. Would like to comment on one of the many sob stories that Harry Reid plied us with on C-span tonight... The one about some woman who was at risk for cervical cancer who already had two kids, at least one of whom had a major health problem (can’t recall details)... The whining Harry was bemoaning the fact that this woman “needed” pap smears or some kind of cervical test EVERY THREE MONTHS but could not afford them, and therefore she is AT RISK for cervical cancer!!??? It may seem overly harsh, but our impulse was to say: “Lady, just get a hysterectomy! Problem solved, and you won’t need to go thru pap tests every 3 months for the next 20 or so years; and WE won’t have to pay for them!” The woman already has children and is already overwhelmed with those childcare/childrearing responsibilities and is already overwhelming the health care system with the children’s health needs. Just get a hysterectomy! It is NOT the taxpayers’ responsibility to pay for this woman’s problems. (P.S. Is there a FATHER/breadwinner in the picture???)
